I attended a horse show today. Where I had to watch a horse being walloped across the head with a cane I 'm not sure why, I think it was because he neighed! The horse didn't react too severely I think it was immune to it. The first two strikes I wasn't sure what had been done and or couldn't believe my eyes. The third strike I was in sutch a state that I stormed down to the secretary to complain. Not knowing the culprits name I wasn't able to give details. This was not a 'rough' type, but a young woman!!! Others around her seemed oblivious including judges.(not sure if they had seen the incidents). I've been around horses a very long time, never have I seen such behaviour. I was and still am several hours later INCENSED.

Yes you did i would have been worse and gone over to her and said something!! There is no need for that kind of treatment i have seen it numerous times at shows!! I would have said something to her, got her number then reported her!! It sounds extreme but i cant stand any form of horse abuse

I witnessed alot of people clouting horses in faces with hands and canes because said ponies where whinnying :confused: cant understand it myself:confused:

So today we went out on a hack (oh on youngster) and daughter on reliable 15.2hh cob ( shes only 11)... hubby fancied a bit of a gallop around the woods so daughter and I waited while the youngster was brave and went off for a loop on his own, the sensible cob my daughter was on was yelling his head off and being a bit exciteable, I told my daughter to gently reassure him, I also stroked his neck and said " it's ok baby, your brother will be back in a short while" he tried to brage me and was very exciteable! Why didn't I think of beating him across the head with a stick?????? Stupid me!!

Bloomin people, YES you did right!!!!!! Welldone you XXXXXX

It incenses me when I see people exhibiting this sort of behaviour and cruelty at shows. If they're prepared to do it at shows, how bad must they be at home?

I witnessed the same thing last weekend, I politely asked the girl why she did it. I was immediately verbally attacked and then within 15 minutes had her "irrate" mother (girl is around 20yrs old) at my house screaming abuse and threatening me. It wasnt pleasant but Im still glad I did as I couldnt just witness this sort of abuse and walk away:(

Definatly!!! i would have also complained to the judge (oviously would have to be after the class!) so that he/she knew that he/she had been seen to ignore it!
my pony neighed as we were about to start a dressage test this morning as her freind had just arrived - never ever would it have entered my head to wallop her - wouldnt have touched her head/face even if she had bucked me off!!!! I cant stand to see horses hit around the head/face for ANY reason!

Knew I had!!! This person was heard boasting about attending a very prestigious event . So will I! One smack and she will be reported to said event organisers, the organisation that she obviously is or might be associated to, and very publicly admonised by me! 'Nough said. Still fuming

The youngster who i'm in the process of buying was viewed by someone else, well known professional horse woman within our local community afew wks ago, who walloped it across the head 3 times before she got on it, when the owner asked her why, she couldn't even give her a rationale...
I was surprised she even let her ride.... She refused to sell it to this individual!

Its bad enough doing it to your own horse, but somebody elses?!

ETA you did right, although I'd have grabbed the cane off the woman and beaten her with it ;-)

Last year I was showing my youngster in hand at an unaffiliated show and he was being a bit of a tit - fidgeting, bunny hopping and neighing. Shunted down the line accordingly and told by the judge "that's what your cane is for - HIT IT".

Needless to say, I didn't...

ets - not that I'm a bunny hugger, he gets reprimanded if he's bargy or ill-mannered and I don't mind getting physical, just draw the line at assaulting him with a cane whilst showing...

 Agree with this. How would these people like to be beaten around the head?!

My pony is very nervous of people taking off jackets while on him, mainly because he was hit around the head with one after he took off when someone tried to take off her jacket and had it flapping around his quarters. He was very nervous at the time, and hadn't ever experienced anything like that, and hitting him with it made him worse, now even the sound of a zip has him shaking. I was about ready to start bashing the person who was doing it to him, and not with a soft jacket!
I think it's pointless beating a horse around the head, it gets you nothing but a stressed out horse.
