As per title really.

Went to see pony tonight, low and behold he has a plait in his mane, brought him in immediately.
Plait was not present this morning when i checked him,

Would you be concerned?

i don't always believe this but better to be safe.

if it is true then yiyr horse is pretty safe now as the thieves now know its regularly checked. whereas if they went back and the plait was still there they would know horse is not regularly checked and safer to turn up and steal.

No - I think it has been said more than once that the plait is probably caused by wind and it is a complete fantasy that the pony has been "marked" for stealing.

For goodness sakes WHEN are people going to stop with this silly nonsense about ponies being plaited prior to someone stealing them.
Because of COURSE they are going to give you a visual sign they are about to nad your prized dobbin eh

i don't understand what this means. do you actually put the horses mane into like normal plaits to stop thieves stealing horses:confused: how does that help

AB - this is all about windtangles. They are even mentioned in Shakespeare (fairies plaiting horses manes at night).

Windtangles are not done by horse thieves... your horse is not going to be stolen if it gets a windtangle.

one of my mares had a plait in her mane once when I kept her somewhere where there was absolutely no possibility of someone getting in and scoping the horses out....decided it was a natural plait

so if your horse has windtangles how come it isnt going to be stolen:confused:

April blue- there is an old wives tail that gypsys will put a plait in a horses mane to mark it, then come back later & steal it. It's complete rot, firstly because the wind knots horses manes. Secondly, when horses are stolen there's no evidence they are plaited beforehand. Thirdly, its illogical to risk being spotted plaiting a mane, only to come back later & steal it. If gypsys were stealing your horse, they'd either take it there & then or come back at night to do so, not waste time planning. And even if its origins are in truth, the fact so many people now believe it, would render it a rather obvious way of warning an owner of impending theft.
It's just a myth, like saying the gypsies steal kids.

Crikey, is this still going around? It's a windtangle, nobody is trying to steal your horse, windtangles are totally irrelevant to whether your horse is stolen or not! It's all rubbish! There's nothing to worry about any more than any other night, honest! :)

went to check my mums pony last week, she had a plait in her mane, tied up with a pink bobble. was not gypsies, was a ten year old girl, who fed her bread and did her hair, no intention of stealing her !

I would say he's easier to steal from a stable (if that's what you mean by "in" ) than he is from a field!

But no, I don't think you need worry.

That's kinda sweet - although perhaps someone could suggest carrots rather than bread.

Yes you did right to bring it in, if only for your peace of mind
And I can assure any doubters that not all plaits are wind tangles - we had a proper plait in our young coloured; and again when we moved him! However, my theory is that it's probably mischief makers with time on their hands, who've heard the marking for theft story.

HAHAHAHAHA!

*Hi Five* :D

Have seen them but never heard that reasoning :p

However, if i found someone had done it - you can tell the diffference c'mon people ;) i would be worried - they aint gonna steal him but "Hey how dare you touch my horse without my permission" would come to mind!

Yes im protective :o:D

have very big signs saying please dont feed them at all, they are all rather fat ! people seem to miss them some how, being huge , with big black letters ! :) can believe she stood there for her to do it, took me 40 mins to catch her to take it out !

Is it read fair to say "here we to again" when someone has heard a rumour/wives tail and are worried about their horse being stolen?

Wouldn't it be kinder to just say ' you have nothing to worry about, it's a windtangle' or whatever.. Rather then belittling.

The thieves who targeted my horses, made it a little bit more obvious than plaits.

They went onto each stable, checked them over, then put headcollars on the mares, and tried to knock out the security lights.

Fortunately my neighbours dog spotted them and raised the alarm, they ran off.

the police chased a car that slowed down outside the yard about 1/2hr later, caught them but had no evidence. Apparently they where known to them.

All our stables now have sensors & CCTV, and we keep all headcollars locked up !

You can tell a windtangle from a plait someone has made.
If I saw an actual plait, I would be worried. Now, I don't believe in thieves who sneak in the fields to stand there plaiting manes. But I know of a livery yard where YO would give lessons to her students on livery horses behind their owners' backs . I would think something along the lines of "If someone was plaiting my horse's mane in my absence, it's not entirely impossible that someone was riding my horse in my absence or whatever."
Sorry, I guess I'm just being paranoid :o
