Does anyone recall the HOYS (or was it Olympia?) when they put an indoor ramp thing over the entrance as had been done in an Irish show at some point - but was it the first horse to go down it broke a leg?

Please tell me I didn't dream it - except that it was tragic for the horse and rider

you didnt imagine it. The first horse went down lovely, think it was the 2nd or 3rd that broke the leg & the bank was then removed from the class. Think it was HOYS but some years ago.

It was in the late 70's / very early 80's. I think around 1978, and I think Beau Supreme (Derek Ricketts) horse was the fatality. And it may have been the Royal International not HOYS which in those days was also held at the Empire Pool, Wembley. AHH, the good old days!!! Someone may correct me on the horse.

I also remember another incident there where the underflooring gave way in a SJ comp - I think that was Harvey Smith's horse though not a fatality.

We had been competing there for a few days, I wanted to stay and watch the new indoor Derby bank but my father needed to get back home so we left that morning. Bizarrely my friend who had been with us and was VERY superstitious had said the evening before while watching the classes "Oh my god, there are birds inside, someone will die" - spooky.

I remember watching it so give me at least 6 years to be of age to remember so must have been late 1980s early 1990s. They had struts for grip but they just weren't doing the job. it was on TV so possibly olympia. either way horrid to watch.

Was def early 90's as I was in my teens at at school. Don't remember if it was HOYS or Olympia though. I do remember that the horse launched from the top of the bank though

It was at Wembley (HOYS) and was based on the indoor Derby at Millstreet in ireland. The horse that broke its leg was ridden by an Austrian.

Beau Supreme broke (think it was a fetlock) his leg after a double (not that ramp thing) and I think it was HOYS too but a lot of years before they tried that ramp as I'm pretty sure it was still Dorian Williams (or Raymond Brooks-Ward) commentating. But like you, stand to be corrected.
Where's SJFAN when you want them?!

I believe the horses name was Sir Arkay?(sp)...think it was a big chestnut, and I *think* it was a hind leg it broke. Can't remember if it was HOYS or not though.

Thankies everyone - I knew it was a novel idea for England and of course Millstreet was the original one they copied.

I saw Beau Supreme and Derek Ricketts fall in a combination long before this and remember all the lights going down and the screens coming round. Very sad

Correct - thank you! Was Sir Arkay ridden by Jurg Freidly (apologies if spelt wrong). Same year Super Ted won the Supreme. Cannot remember the year of that but Super Ted retired from the show ring in 1994.

It was 1992 I believe. The bank went over the entrance to the arena. There was a lot of controversy before the class, but people still entered. It looked to be a total accident, but was removed from the class immediately.

I also remember Beau Supreme being put down - fairly sure it was shown on television as I don't think I was there in person.

I didn't see it, but I remember the situation, IIRC the horse in question wasn't wearing studs, which had been recommended to all the riders before going in for the comp. Indoor Derbies were great classes
