Did I really get ripped off.

I said that because she wanted a happy hackerand didnt get that...if its the same horse she spent a while having a nitemare with him and she paid dealer that amount fora quiet hacker?? so she had to put the work in to make him good...so yes i think she prob paid a lot for a horse mcateer will have picked up for pittance and for a reason...however he is worth a lot more to her now as hes oviously come good !

Should of slapped her for being so damn rude :p

Good horses are hard to find. Yours sounds like a keeper and most would pay 4k for a horse like that IMO.

Rude and don't let it bother you. I always find the purchase price of a horse doesn't matter as it is the running costs that add up to more in the long run! Only folks who have a chip on their shoulder go on about how much they paid x etc... like it something they have to brag about.

Always answer these questions with a "None of you business and he is priceless to me" unless it is a good friend who you know and trust with that information.

Many years ago, at HOYS, my then boss was asked how much his heavyweight showhunter would cost. His answer was 'More money than you have Madam' (ie there wasn't any way he would ever be for sale for any price) As he said it he slowly realised he was talking to the Queen. Ouch! :D

'that thing' if someone said that about my horse it would be like a stab to the heart. You can't put a price on something that has made you happy for so many years-and years to come. If I knew what I knew about my horse And how much I would grow to love her a mere £2000 would be a total bargain for all the days of happiness she would bring me. Ahh this is soppy

yes horse andshoes..you are quite right .....but as it turns out i don t feel that ripped off now and hearing some of the horror stories I can see how lucky i was.
I reckon i was a bit of a nob for buying him on my own and not doing the research first.
Maybe some of the more knowledgable people roundabout would have felt better if i had got the ending i deserved!

Dunno the circumstances in which you bought him but it's nobody's business what you paid for him and it's a damned cheek of this woman to ask you, not to mention her reaction. If anyone asks you again, tell them you paid £500 and see what they say to that.

I paid £2000 for a 2yo about 5 years ago because I thought he looked nice. No breeding, no handling, nothing .... I'm not made of money, I'd really saved up for the right horse but the owner wouldn't haggle and I had decided I was having him. LMAO .... Money isn't everything, he was worth every penny and more.

I paid £2100.00 for a 10 yr old Highland x TB gelding 14.2 hh 11 years ago. Best bargain ever. Totally safe on roads and we have done low level dressage (rarely came home without a rosette), pleasure rides and loads of hacking.

Never bucked or reared and easy to do in hand, I would lead him anywhere.

Bit wary of men (how sensible) and easy to shoe, vet and ED, very wary of but spend a few minutes with and not a problem.

You have a wonderful horse that suits you, sod everybody's opinions!!!!

What a cow, he sounds like a lovely horse and as long as he's what you wanted then he's worth every penny!

Any half sensible horse for under 2500 is alright if you ask me!

Sounds like a bargain to me. Vet said to me when I bought my horse that he was worth the £3k being asked if I got 3 good years out of him. Had 7 good years and still going strong. Based on this you got a great deal too!

Horses are only worth what someone is willing to pay. I would pay far more for something which hacks out safely and sanely but was green in the school than I would for something which was a ready made competition article but a nutter out hacking. Sanity and safety is paramount to me. No you were not robbed it sounds like you have a wonderful horse to enjoy. :)

OP if it helps put it onto contect - five years ago I paid over three times what you paid for a well bred warmblood - and we haven't had a whole year out of her yet without some disaster accompanied by a large vet bill. Mind you we love her dearly and wouldn't part with her for the world.

On a funny aside, we were going on holiday in August and I rang the vet to let him know that my yard owner had my full permission to make any decision on my behalf regarding any treatment that the horse may need whilst away (she has a habit of injuring herself each time my daughter goes away) - his comment was: "when are you going" - I replied "first thing Thursday morning" - he chuckled and said - well I'll expect a phone call Thursday or Friday then :) :)

But she was absolutely fine - first time ever :)

It makes no difference what you pay for a horse, I have paid prices from a few pounds to thousands and each horse has been treated the exact same way and given me years of happiness. Who cares what you paid - you love your horse and that's what matters - it seems to me that jealousy is the problem here.
