Did the KC ban AI?

I caught a bit of a blurb about the KC banning AI or maybe it was surgical AI. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?
 
"Please note that from the beginning of 2019, the use of surgical insemination has been banned by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Therefore, no applications will be accepted whereby the litter was produced using this method."

That wording has been on the AI registration form since last year
 
It's definitely a problem if the stud is dead ;)
In my own experience (maybe breed specific) live covers (even to the same dogs) produce more puppies, seen too many small litters, litters of one, or female not taking.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I definitely believe if dogs can't breed on their own and whelp on their own that the breed has taken a wrong turn. And I don't mean the occasional dystocia, I mean having to schedule a c-section. A lot of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeders in this country are doing that and they are going to breed away from free whelping, IMO.
But like CorvusCorax mentioned it is a problem if the stud is dead. Also, if he is across the country or on the show circuit.
 
In my own breed (and yours ;)) it's more to do with distance rather than inability to mate. It's hard for some countries to access popular European studs. The trend is now to send the big dogs abroad for a few months where they will get lots of covers, although a friend sent his female to the USA for two breedings/extended holiday, one litter born there and one born here.

This isn't true. See the Kennel Club's own page about AI registrations here. The ban is on SURGICAL AI and is via the Royal Vet College. Both transvaginal (lay person or vet) and transcervical AI (vet only) are permitted as considered to be non-surgical AI techniques.

Spaniel #1's great, great, great grandad sired a litter from beyond the grave a few years ago, which I found unexplainably creepy.

Yet we don't blink in horses - I have semen stored from a deceased FTCh spaniel!
 
I have had an AI litter. I was able to use frozen semen from a deceased dog (semen had been frozen for 10 years) My reasons for using this option were 1. It was a good match both on paper and on construction, 2. The dog had only sired 5 litters whilst alive so avoiding popular sire effect, 3. Sire consistently produced healthy, sound and good temperament puppies. The mating produced 5 puppies (2 dogs, 3 bitches) all have fabulous homes. 2 are much loved pets and the other 3 are shown and have qualified for Crufts, 1 has his JW and his SGWC
I am very proud of this litter that without AI would not have been possible
 
Surgical Ai and standard Ai are not the same things.
Surgical involves a full general anesthetic, opening into the abdomen and placing the sperm directly into the uterus. then having the bitch recover from the op...thats why its frowned upon. Ethics of that sort of breeding are pretty questionable.
Standard AI is via vaginal or cervical insemination,no sedation let alone a ga required-much much less invasive on the dog.

? I’ll never believe my mother again.... and her a KC member too! I must admit I didn’t even realise there were two types ?
