Did you buy the first horse..?

NO!!!

I've looked at lots over the best part of a year!

And to think that this time last year I was worrying about the wisdom of buying a horse when I hadn't looked at others.... but the owner changed her mind about selling and saved us the worry! Little did I know how long it would take.

Yes brought the first horses.

My grey in sig was the first horse I ever brought, she was a present to myself for finishing uni and my first 'proper' horse as the others had been on loan or family hand me downs.

I went to see her, the first horse I looked at and I had planned on trying loads out. I had lined up others to view the afternoon after seeing her and the next day! I didn't like her at first as she looked 'sulky'. I hacked her out, I had a gut instinct that she was genuine, I could get a tune out of her, she was the right age, size and breed so yep that was it. I told her owner I would think about it, owner gave me the old chestnut that other people were coming to view her the next day. On the way home my mum and I stopped, rang her owner and said we would have her and we canceled all the other horse viewings.
I picked her up a week later, she was a pain and it took us ages to bond. Many tears and tantrums BUT I never fell off her, she always kept me safe and she became my best friend. It wasn't easy but I stuck with it and it was the right decision.

Current horse was first horse to view, he was on lwvtb. When I went to see him he wouldn't stand still for the girl to mount and she had to be chucked on him as he raced off, he was stiff in the school and napped like a monster when I tried to ride him away from their yard, he almost unseated me. However I thought he was gorgeous and I loved his pretty face. When riding him, I felt that he was the sort of horse that would suit me and that he was worth a punt. Got him home and he was perfect straight away, the easiest horse Ive ever owned. I think he was just having a bad day when I went to try him! 9 months later I brought him.

Theres been only once when I tried to view a few before buying. I went to some dealers and tried a few out and you know what? I couldnt decide! When I did buy one it was lame and totally unsuitable.

The ones I brought that were the first horses I saw, I had my mum with me. I think she has an eye for a horse because shes the one that has said 'go on, get it, its gorgeous!!!' and i've returned home with 2 scrawney TB's that have turned out to be priceless. When I went to try without my mum, I got too bogged down in what I *thought* I wanted.

I dont understand those people who have to try out 100's of horses. If you cant find what you are looking for then you are either looking for the impossible or are not realistic with what your budget can buy.

To me if its the right price, is the right stamp and I feel it suits me then I get it. They all have little niggles when you get them home but the sooner you buy one and get them home then the sooner you can build a bond up, get over the teething troubles and start having fun :D

Lucy was the first pony I saw. I say saw as I didn't realy try her out I just looked over the fence at this terrified little pony and fell in love and couldn't bare the thought of her going for meat. So we offered more than the meatman would pay, hearded her into a lorry and the rest as they say is history. :p ;) :D :D
Horrid Herbie was the first I saw. He was so sad when I went to see him and there was no way I could leave him where he was :( I don't regret a single moment of the last year with him. :D

The pony I got at the weekend was the first we went to see. I wasn't realy looking for another pony but saw him advertised and went for a little nosey. He is so lovely. Settled in streight away and is being as good as gold :D

I have bought 10 over 16 years and they have all been teh first one I went to see. Sorry, but I can't understand people trailing round looking at loads - it's the same with anything I buy, I know what I want and am 99.9% certain I'm going to buy it before I go to see it, otherwise I woudn't bother going and wasting both my and the seller's time.

I bought the first one I went to see. I always perused the interenet but never seriously with the aim to buy anything, I was aware that for the first time I could potentially afford something early this year. Then I met a guy I really liked who proceeded to be lovely followed by disappearing off the face of the planet (to that place that men go!) which was subsequently followed by me falling off a deranged pointer on the gallops twice in 30 minutes. At this stage I thought I don't really like dappy Tb's! Saw my boy (13.2hh Fell pony) advertised and went to see him, he ended up arriving the day before Valentines day - best rebound relationship ever! :D

Ah but just because you know what you want doesn't mean the first one will be suitable! My search went something like this:
Horse seemed spot on owner changed her mind about selling
Sold to someone else who was quicker
Slightly misleading ad - not what we wanted
Owner messed around giving someone else first refusal and then increasing the price
Owner changed her mind about selling
Nice but unlevel and greener than the ad said
Seemed perfect but failed the vet
Ad totally misleading
Nice horse but too light weight
Nice horse but very green
etc etc

So as much as you may have your criteria sorted you can't always know whether a horse meets it until you go to see it.

I bought the first one i saw, I felt sorry for her she was so skinny, her hooves desperatly needed seeing to I just couldnt leave her there! I got her home she came down with strangles, turned into a complete nightmare, two years later after lots of hard work i am now riding her and starting to get a bond with her, I wouldnt change her for the world!

No. When I was looking for my new 'forever' horse, I tried loads - all over the country. I drove and flew, tried lots, rode some several times, was arranging a vetting etc for one, then saw a photo of a horse in Ireland... Saw a DVD of him moving (not even backed) and ended up buying him without even seeing him, let alone riding him (he was vetted though). I blew a sizeable budget on him, despite being offered RIHS qualified horses for the same price or less! He is a total star though, and everything I wanted.

Toffee was my first loan pony and was handed over to me, still with me ten years on. Still being a "spooky" hack, we just have brakes now :D
When I loaned her she was too much for me to be fair she jogged, spooked and bolted but oh what a cracker she turned into with some time and the biggest horsy learning curve of my life :D
