Questions in the title really, What was your Horse called when you bought him/her? did you change it and if so why?

My share Horse is called Nelly, she already had that name when she was bought, owner wasn't sure she liked it at first but she kept it. Name really suits her.

How about yours?

I was always told its unlucky to change an animals name so use variations of it, Chip is Chippie , Hermione is Hermie etc

I've kept all my horses stable names. The silliest being my coloured mare - Lisa. I changed her show name from Lady Lysette to Foxy Lady though. x

Not always, my first horse was called Jester, I changed it to Chester as I didn't like the fool connotations!

The next didn't have a name.

The next was Rugby - kept.

Then Maverick, which I changed to Murphy :)

And lastly, Ed, who will always be Ed :D

Kept all of my horses names - I have a Zoon, Aladdin and Ice. Although odd, I kinda like Zoon and never considered changing that. Aladdin I was going to change, but whilst trying to think of something else we used it and then it stuck. Most of the time they get called other things anyway, like Fat Pony, Little Sod, etc!

Roxy kept Roxy

Ayla was Lady.....know too many of them and none acted like a lady!!!

Beau - Didnt know his name he was bought at auction

Not always, my first horse was called Jester, I changed it to Chester as I didn't like the fool connotations!

Nope Lina was called MUFFIN ! ... I changed it because I didn't like the MULE connotations lol - I think you have to be over a certain age but it was everywhere we went !!... oh like Muffin the mule ??? NO ! ha ha

over time she became known as Muffalina the ballerina as she has a liking for prancing about on her back legs and dancing round you in circles - that then just got shortened to Lina !! it suits her and she comes to me when I call it up the field

For the record Nelly is a great name ! It's mine and the OH's nick names as our surname is Nelson !

My horse was called Snowy when I bought him. He's now called Louie which is based on a part of his passport name.
I'm an adult and my horse is only just 15hh so I couldn't have a 'pony' name as well now could I?! :)

I've had a timber, which I kept, quirky name for a quirky ponio.
A pepper that I changed to pepsi.
A Molly, changed to Ellie, fresh name plus a fresh start for this poor horse.
My sons pony was polly....as in parrot lol... We changed it to Holly.

Mine all have the names that they came with Larry, Sisco and Danny was always told it was bad luck to change a horses name.

Unfortunately yes! I wanted to change Fany's name but Elizabeth believes it is unlucky. The terrible jokes we get are innumerable.:D

We can't change her showing name because she has won quite a lot showing in big shows in Belgium.

We've never changed any of ours - they were all ok names. Hmm, what did we start with...

Sunshine, Brandy, Lucky (probably the worst name for any animal!), Clutterbuck (donkey), Yogi, Spike, Flix (well that was a loan pony), Chancer, Woody, Norman and the latest one Rocky. We've also got a TB called Dez but he's just been handed over to us on permanent loan. They all suit their names really though.

We've changed most of our horses names..we had Micky that we changed to Maverick (a big ex steeple chaser sounded like he needed a stronger name than Micky!) Then we had Star Spangle that we changed to Aramis.. Followed by Bellamanda who we changed to Bonita..basically because at the yard when we first got her on one side was a horse Bello & on the other a horse called Ella so went for something a bit different! lol.. don't believe in the unlucky thing..lol

I have changed my current horses name, breeder called him Norman  - just didn't suit him so it's now Hastings. I managed to get the breeder to change his show name before applying for his passport as he was going to be Lenham Norman Whiteside, he is just Lenham Whiteside now - phew ;)

I wanted to change my horses name as it's a bit predictable for a black horse (have a guess!) and his registered name has an Elvis song in it so I wanted to call him Presley. But everyone told me it was unlucky so the unimaginative name has stuck. I do shorten it though.

I'm in the 'it's unlucky to change a horses name club'.

Have only ever renamed one of my ponies, he was called Cloud. And it reminded me of a horse I know that is ugly as sin. So he got renamed to Paddy, because he threw a lot of them!!

OK, so my horse's name isn't as unimaginative as it could have been, lol! Black Jack is a good change though.

thank you :)

i also know someone who has a horse called 'spotted gelding' changed to 'spotty' and then 'smarty' i cant believe 2 people thought those were good names! smarty is ok..

When I got Hadleigh as a 3 year old he was called George. He was most definitely NOT a George. I changed his name to Hadleigh. Coincidentally the only horse ever to put me in hospital was called George!! That wasn't the reason for the name change though.
As for the bad luck idea we were together for 28 glorious years. I lost him last April aged 31. He was an extremely healthy horse and a tb to boot. One in a million. Love ya Haddy.

My exracer didnt really have a pet name - she was referred to as "Blackie" but didnt know it anyway. I called her Flora as she is by Alflora and have had her 4 years so she definitely knows it now.
Recently got a horse on loan as Flora's companion - and guess what .... it is called "Flo". I cant change it (and wouldnt want to as she has had enough upset in her life already) so stuck with the confusion of Flo and Flora!
