Did your horse(s) come to you named? Also......

My first pony was called Cherub initially (Arctic Cherub if posh) but the people who owned her before us didn't like Cherub so they changed her to Cherie which we didn't like either so she ended up as Cherry with us.
My next horse came over from Ireland from Shirley Kernan and she was one of two chestnuts which were known as big and little Shirley! I didn't like calling her Little Shirley and thought my Auntie Shirley might be offended to asked if we could find out her real name. After months of waiting it turned out she was called Melanie! I wasn't keen on this so she ended up being called Amber - very original I know! Her show name was Amber Gambler because thats what my mum calls dad when he accelerates towards amber traffic lights!
My current horse was called Genesis when I got her but this kept reminding me of Phil Collins and so didn't seem very ladylike so we shortened it to Jenny. I'm still thinking of a show name as she just gets called Jenny at the moment - I might call her Drama Queen as she can certainly act like it!

My first pony came as Tim and stayed Tim!! Everyone used to laugh and say it was a ridiculous name but it suited him down to the ground. We put him out on loan and they called him Timmy - I absolutely hate that name!!!
mad.gif

Sid came to us as Crossdrum Cassidy - Cassidy was too much of a mouthful and I didn't want it to be shortened to Cas - so he became Sid!

Sky still has her registered name KSN Queen Of Hearts, but changed her stable name which was Jessie. Bad luck I know - but her proper name stayed the same and there's no way I was going to own a horse called Jessie!

ETA: Lucy_Spring - your first pony's name is my surname!!

Chess didn't have a name when she came over from Ireland (they called her Tits?!
blush.gif
) and we called her various names before Chess stuck!!
I changed Lillie's name to Lillie- she was called Emily and it really didnt suit a big powerful warmblood!! Her proper name is Perlita, so Lillie was a compromise (plus it really suited her!)Now I wished I had listened to everybody who told me that changing a horses name is bad luck- she was sadly PTS last year.

My horse came with her name, she is called Senza and i think it suits her down to the ground. A pretty name for a pretty mare (ok i am biased LOL). Her old owner got the name from the knicker shop La Senza though so i have had a few jokes about that.

My old horse Trike was called Trike M on his passport and me being so imaginative named him Trike, i didn't want to change it too much though and i also wanted a name that was original so Trike it was. Got so many people say to me 'what tike?' and i used to have to reply 'no Trike as in a 3 wheeled bike'. Got that all the time!! Dont know if Rambo still does he he

As a kid I had (in succession) Pickles, Bubbles and then Poppy.

All came named, and suitably-named too I think - especially Pickles who was a very naughty madam and always getting in trouble. I never considered changing any of their names - somehow it would seem like like taking away their personalities, if that makes any sense!

well Eddie came to us as Legal Eagle (his passport name), and they just called him Eagle in the stable, and i really couldnt warm to it, so ended up calling him eddie and it really suited him
tongue.gif

Harry came as Harry Hobnob, stable name Harry, and he has stuck that way! (Although call him Haz more than Harry)

Pidge came over from Ireland with no name just a foal number on his passport. The dealer called him Pidgeon because of some white over his eye, I hated it but being supersticious just shortened it to Pidge and christened him Diamond Minstrel properly with the ISH taken from his pedigree. I must admit I couldn't quite believe a horse could get to 8 and not have a name!

Storm (I expectd her to be grey when I went to see her but no..........chestnut!) I wanted to change it but Storm just suits her.
Missy was missy when I bought her and it suits her because she's a right cheeky madam
grin.gif

And Allie I named, I have no idea where it came from but I thought if it one day and it suited the gangly, wonkey legged, big eared baby she once was
grin.gif

We have a little companion pony called Honey - a bit twee so she has evolved into Honey Monster. We have a Magic Millbrook who has the stable name Flicka, no idea how Flicka came from Magic Millbrook and would not choose to call a horse that - its as bad as snowy or Cloudy (sorry if your horses are called that). She knows it and it seems wrong to change it.

My horse is called Capon de Ville on his passport and I have no idea what his stable name was in Holland so I call him Oliver. I think his name is really weird as a capon is a castrated cockrel so it appears that he is called "Castrated Cockerel of the Town"! Not nice is it?!!

first horse was officially called Pettaugh however the people i bought him from wouldn't allow me to have his passport in fear of me racing him again (at 15?!!!) he came as Peta - and after much digging on internet and the racing post website i finally tracked down his real name and how he'd done racing!! Anyway - he was a boy, so i changed Peta to Pete!

Ludo came as Ludo and stayed that way - new owners i htink call him Ludo too!

Bonnie came with 3 names

... registered Weatherby's name is Dunmidoe (sp), BE name is Legal Eagle III, and stable name Bonnie. Have kept the BE and stable name, not so keen on her racing name and i'm not about to race her again (on purpose

oh - my cats came to me as Honda and Suzuki, that changed to Monty (now passed on

) and Merlot

We have just bought one whose name I shall not reveal atm, but lets say, most people have recoiled or laughed when they heard it. I have been whinged at to change it, but i won't because he knows his name, and it suits him. Too much confusion for them coming to a new home then burdening them with a new name too.
(I actually quite like his name, it reminds me of Black Beauty).

It's got to be merrylegs, hasn't it?

The horse I shared after school was called Muffie, show name Grandeur. He was not in the least grand! I hated it, but what can you do?
Horse I share now is Spike, show name Airmail, but normally competes under Just Spike.

i had a pony once called poo, had to change it couldnty bring myself tocall out POO! at the gate each day, Rio was called Abrico when i got her , semi changed shortened it to rio, as at comps people couldnt say it right, and ended up entering her as rio,
hector has has so many dif names in his life from Gorby's myth, to handsome henry, when i got him he was hector so hector he has remained (plus it really suits him
grin.gif
)

Axel came to me named, and I was tempted to change it until I found the connection.
His proper name is 'Shotgun Blues' which is a song by Guns n Roses, the lead singer of Guns n Roses is called........Axl

Apparently the groom at the Stud was a massive G n R fan
smile.gif

I probably spell it wrong to how it was intended
grin.gif

Rushmoor Liberty or liberty or libby or libs.... I liked the name her reg name from breeder so unchangable any how... Suited her down to tee....

I think Dermot came from Ireland as 'Athlone Webster' shorten to 'Webster' but I brough him as 'Dermot' hate the name and every one laughs at it... little ashamed so often call him Mr D. but it suits him too much to change. His full name is now 'Athlone maverick' suited the rep he came with, and I hated 'Webster'.

Agree with changing name... feels wrong... maybe because you met them as that name it suits them I guess...

My old girl was called Cinderella when my parents first got her. This was hastily chaned to Cinders and she has had this name foe nearly 30 years now.
My Welshie Llinos still has her original Welsh name but it usually gets anglacised to Linnet as most people cannot pronounce it properly to do it justice!

My first horse came from a hunting yard and was a big strapping lad called cocoa?!?
confused.gif
wasn't keen on that so i called him Barnaby with his show name being 'Just Barnaby'. I would never change a horses name again as a few weeks later his feet fell apart and he had to have the whole first summer off!!
crazy.gif

Ben came as Ben as he was called Benjamins Pride, Misty kept her stable name and we named her Desert Mist for competitions as she was dun. Alfie only had a stable name so as a competition name we called him 'Alfie Moon'. We bought Twirl as Mr Twirl and the two babies were named by there respective breeders as Holme Grove Chantelle so i called her Tilly for short and Evening sky, Evie for short.
grin.gif

Will never rename another horse again no matter how awful it sounds!! LOL!!

Nope mine had no name, well probably known as "the bay" lol. after getting him home it took a few days to decide, i settled on Henry after "Henry the Hoover" as he hoovers up all his food!
xx

My first horse was 15 and came with the name smudge (bowes snapshot) and i didnt change it. my 3yo came with no name and no name on passport so i calld him darsey aka mr darsey common i know! but the spelling is irish and means dark one, and he's irish and dark! lol

both mine came named, maddy (madison) was originally molly, which just didn't suit her at all and she didn't respond to it, so we changed it. Flash is staying as he is, its kind of an ironic name really! My dad calls him Fred for some reason. His registered name is Dream Machine III, slightly bizarre but its staying

Both Fudge and Lady came with their names, wouldn't change Fudges as it suits him because of his colouring (dun) and because he's always getting into trouble just like Fudge from the TV series
laugh.gif

Lady I would have loved to change her name but she answered to it, would have liked her to be called, Flaire, Flicka (corny I know but I loved those books as a kid), Malibu. Her show name is Lady Locket.
They both have 'pet' names too given to them by my friends children, Fudges is Bubble and Lady's is little NooNoo.

Splodge was from a dealers yard and was known as Narcos (his sire) - I didnt think that was right as Narcos shouldnt be replicated so called him Splodge due to the white splash on his belly and it really suited him! When he was sold and sold on again he was sold as Smudge
mad.gif
When I got in touch with the new owner I told her it was Splodge and she agreed it suited him MUCH better!!! I dont have a prob changing stable names TBH

Jess came as Jess but ended up as JJ, Show name i chose was Swift Decision as last name is Swift and she was a spur of the moment purchase as was advised not to touch her with a barge pole! Had her 8 yrs and she was the best horse i had ever owned. RIP JJ..(only paid £100 for her)!!!
William didn't have a name as came from the knackers yard, so called him William after my grandad as i used some money he left me to buy him(but after getting to know him, should have called him Kevin)! His racing name was Lisnalty so called him Equitaxi's Lisnalty so i can put his show gear through the books LOL.
Jo

My first horse came with the name rosie, which suited her, and showname for her was patchwork puzzle i made that up.

My second horse was called fred but i changed it to freddie as i dont like the name fred, no idea what his show name is on his passport though.

All my horses except the foals (Kipper McRae and Flynn
blush.gif
) came named and I changed ALL their names to those of film characters.
Sooooo PF is Charlie Big Potato for Weatherbys, and became (Clarice) Starling, but once in Argentina changed again to PapaFrita.
I had a Tamashan who became (Cooler King) Hilts, a Bamboo Garden who became (Randle P) McMurphy a Killarney Jazz who became (Jimmy) Malone and a TwentyfourEve who just became Evie. Oh, and a Tamarinda Little Imp who didn't get a film character name, just became Curly Girly.
