Hi, I have two dogs that have had some digestive problems recently and I am looking for ideas. My 7 year old terrier has had a bout of something similar to IBS in humans, apparently! Over Xmas she was straining a lot and passed some blood. Seems ok now after some medication, but not sure whether to change her diet. She is very fussy and only tends to want to eat cheap complete dry foods, and even better if I mash some nature diet or gravy in. What else could I try or shall I just see if it re-occurs?

My other dog is a 9 month old ridgeback cross who was vomitting a lot and vet diagnosed too much acid in his stomach. He too is on medication, and good thing with him is he will eat anything I put in his bowl! Currently on Beta Purine Large Breed Puppy. Anything better I could use to reduce acid??

Thanks!

Thanks, yeah I have heard that too. Maybe I should think about swopping to Chappie and mixer biscuits?

Just a little concerned with my young boy as he is still only 9 months. Do other people with big dogs feed the "large breed" foods or do you think they are not needed this young?

My boxer has always had a sensitive digestive system. He has the Denes Sensitive Stomach dry food with a bit of tinned pedigree meat mixed in and is mostly fine on it. He goes through stages of not eating which then upsets his stomach but definitely doesn't have as many problems as he used to.

If she likes naturediet - then why not feed naturediet? They do a sensitive version? Then you can add mixer - eg. laughing dog mixer. To give dry and wet.

Your dogs have problems with thier food - maybe best to try something which is good quality? and not made from rubbsih like alot of pet foods are... Ones I've had recommended are:

Burns (Dry Food)
Land of Holistic Pets (Dry Food)
Applaws (wet food)
Naturediet (Wet food)

You can also feed homecooked or a natural diet - depending on what suits you best.

I feed mine a natural (raw) and homecooked diet - but if am away from home or in a hurry I feed Naturediet with Laughing Dog mixer.

Have a read of this here for more info.

If your dogs have bad tummies - you can feed chicken and mashed potato or rice which helps to settle them. The bio live yoghurt helps to replace the bacteria.

Hope that helps? and hoep you get them sorted. x

Well is pretty much flexible... I feed mine raw food in the morning - so chicken wings, lamb (ribs, fatty cuts etc.), goat or pork. Sometimes he gets tinned sardines in oil for breakfast.

The homecooked bit is his evening meal - I feed him rice or gluten free pasta or couscous or mashed potato with cooked meat or fish (all boneless) and veg. I make up 'meat porridge' - see the website I linked to earlier for deatila. this can be made up in bulk and frozen into portions. So make as much as you can! I often freeze 7 or eight portions. then defrost as i need them. Sometimes I cook it on the night and leave to cool then feed him.

re: doing a natural or homecooked diet - I would suggest you get advice from a nutritionist for your particular dogs - just so you can be sure you get the quantities right etc. Loki is a labrador - so he gets more fish than some other breeds as was originally bred to retrieve fish and labradors are designed to eat that. He can also eat beef no problems - but some dog breeds are senstive to beef...

I can reccomend a nutritionist who can do you diet sheets for a donation to dog rescue. Can pm you the details if you like.

I also feed my dog large bones for teeth cleaning.

Also - I have done alot of reading on feeding dogs naturally. I would recommend this book: FEEDING YOUR DOG FOR LIFE by Diane Morgan - I've found it really really good.
