Diet tips.... for rider!

eat less -simple, but eat only real food, salads, meat and real veg alittle potato baked, never miss breakfast, eggs one day porridge the next, fruit nuts as snacks and make some soups thick and wholesome for the evening, cut out treats and alcohol in the week.

don't shove vast quantities
of cake and choc down your neck and you'll do just fine!

and for sake of your health don't take sugar substitutes and crap margarine and commercial, mayonnaise, use olive oil on foods, i use it as a sauce on salads, on me, on the horse, in the horse.......

remember fish is lower in calories than meat and contains important oils for your health

Signed up for my fitness pal and just scared myself with calories in work breakkfast! Any ideas for a brekkie I can bring to work and eat that takes little prep - I'm up at 5:00 every morning and no access to a cooker/microwave at work! Don't have time before I leave home

Sparkpeople app on android & I phone is great, and also can use it online, sparkpeople.com . Counts cals, protein, fat & crabs, and gives u a range to stick within for all 4. Also can add any exercise to it too, is great I lost 1.5 stone with it, but then put a load back on due to foal watch!

Also few miles of trotting a day really helps, rider & pony :D

Always wanted to count my crabs ;) hee hee!!

eat less and exersise more - and make sure that what you do eat is low sugar (pref no refined sugar) and a balanced diet of small portions (i eat 5 times a day to keep hunger at bay too which helps - routine is the key for me)

that's what helped me loose 3.5stone ;)

breakfast uncooked - i would'nt eat those bar things - pot of plain bifidus yogurt, one piece of fruit, one slice of bread with a little butter or jam, or one piece of bread a little salmon or cheese very thinly sliced, this is for those needing to move around physically, put in a small plastic box the night before, take to work, at 10 30 am small cube of cheese, eat a proper lunch.

breakfast like king, lunch like a prince, supper like a pauper, will gaurantee you won't pass out whilst riding.

remember to drink water, one glass first thing, one at eleven etc, throughout the day it will boost energy.

Have been battling recently to lose a few pounds, used to eat no end of chocolate, but now have found it really hard to give up I am not missing it. Always start the day with a small bowl of porridge, really fills you up and dont feel hungry until lunchtime. Also put smaller portions on my OH's and my plates, seems to be working for both of us. Oh yes I do eat grapefruit first thing every morning, heard something years ago that it can help stop the absorption of fat, not sure if its true but there might be something in it as there are quite a few medications that are affected by eating grapefruit but nobody seems to know why.

I've recently lost two stone after spending the last 10 years hauling it about post childbirth! For whatever reason I never returned to my pre-baby fit self until now but now that I have I feel great and regret not doing it sooner!

I cut out bread, pasta, alchohol, anything sweet, you get the picture and also went vegetarian. I also try to 'move' in some physical way everyday so I go to the gym, ride, swim or start the day like today by poo picking and cutting down nettles for an hour.

Im on this way of eating for life, bread just doesnt work for me and Im convinced its made me hold onto weight, ditto other heavy carbs, I'll have them occasionaly but know that unless you are very physical they cant be a main part of any weight mainting or reducing diet.

So budding dieters, I say go for it in whatever form you find sustainable, find something you love to do physically and you will find you stick at it, take up jogging when you hate to run and you will not! Dont kill yourself on restricting your diet either, again do what you think you can manage for at least say 6 months, dont eat grapefruit for a week and then wonder why you regain double when you stop!

I gave birth 5 1/2 mths ago and now 2 stone overweight, thank you for the above, really helpful, I am also awful with carbs especially bread. I am desperate to shift this weight!

I went to a nutitionist and followed her advice. Breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner. Avoid carbs in evening but eat them in the day to keep you going. Eat lots of protein and veg. Cut out chocolate, sugary fruits and cake etc. Don't eat fruit as dessert but as a snack. Cottage cheese or those triangles with almost nothing in, otherwise cheese is bad. Drink water. Do exercise. All pretty obvious really. I lost 14 kgs, but I did put a few back on in april-june with horsey off work and moving stress. Really hated myself for that so am losing them plus aim to lose another 12. Think I'm doing ok at least at getting back to march weight which I'm desperate to do, hence no going out at all.

I find no going out means no restaurant food and no booze and cutting out booze helps loads as its both te empty calories and the stuffing yourself to eliminate the hangover which it gets rid of.

Weigh yourself or measure yourslef but only once a week or fortnight and at the same time of day or you will go mad, if you take a pee and weigh yourslef before and after you will understand why - you will be a few hundred grammes lighter just for taking a wee.

I've got my fitness pal too now it's really good for a free app so I'll see how I get on... It tells me that an hour of horse riding burnt between 350-500 calories depending what you do, I'm sure that can't be right!

I have lost over two stone in the last 18 months. My tips are

1) Keep an eye on portion size. I was having the same size of portions as hubby - Not good when I sit at a desk during the day. I make sure that my hands cover my portions.
2) Once your full - stop eating. I still feel guilty leaving food on my plate.
3) Only one portion of bread a day so I have cereal in the morning instead of toast.
4) Cut out processed food. I do slimming world oven chips instead of oven chips and I very rarely eat processed food.
5) Fruit, fruit and more fruit. I love nectarines, plums when they are in season so I make sure I have them in the house.
6) Tons of canter work and it gets us both fit
