Just wondered if cooked barley is associated with a deterioration of hoof condition in some horses? He has always had good feet and nothing else has changed with his diet, farriery or husbandry (but obviously this summer was very damp). The problems started just prior to them coming in for the winter (a couple of months after adding the Barley) and we have not really made any significant progress with lotions, potions etc. I have just started him on limestone powder and kevin bacons hoof supplement to cover any insufficiencies, as I am aware that diet is regarded by most to be the key underlying issue. If the cooked barley is a possible culprit for the deterioration what would you suggest to feed that is non-heating and will maintain his weight until they are out again in spring?
On the feet themselves we are cleaning the hooves with disinfectant and applying the Kevin Bacon foot dressing which is for thrush and other infections (specifically concentrating on the problem area of the crevice at the heel where I think all the trouble is being harbored).
