I have a 9 year old 14.2 show cob on loan and have had her now for 18 months. She had very little done with her for some time before I took her on and was dangerously overweight. To give you an idea of how she looked her saddle didnt fit properly due to the rolls of fat on her shoulders. Due to this her workload has had to be increased very very gradually to allow her stamina and fitness level to increase. She is doing well despite it being a very lengthy process however we seem to have come to a bit of a standstill and she still needs to lose more weight.
She is on restricted grazing (no more than 2 hours per day) ridden 5-6 times per week, hay in small holed doubled up haynets (she will gorge until its gone!) and a 'token' feed to ensure she is getting all her nutritional requirements. I have seen a NAF supplement for weight loss but am not too sure about how safe this would be. She is muscling up nicely around her neck, shoulders and bum but the belly is still rather round. She still has difficulty with canter due to the fact that she was soooo unbalanced and I'm wondering whether the belly may draw up more when she is cantering better. Any other bright ideas or suggestions from anyone that has experienced trimming up a chunky monkey?
