Okay I know this has been asked a million times, but all I can really find is jointed pelhams are "useless" and mullen mouths good BUT I was wondering EXACTLY what differences it makes in the mouth and on the curb? I saw someone saying that the jointed can create a "crushing triangle" effect on the curb, whereas some seem to say it leaves the curb not being used? would the jointed be a lot stronger/harsher?
I have been riding my pony in a jointed rugby pelham and its been the best he has gone but my instructor wanted me to try a mullen rubber one which I bought today. Its one of the jp flexi ones, so quite a thin mouth (I dont like the look of those thick black ones!) and spud was just terrible. We generally have slight control issues anyway when he doesnt want to school, but in the rubber he was atrocious. He wasn't fast at all, but the whole "trot" thing just went out the window we did large numbers of beautiful walk to canter transitions (something we usually cant, he generally rushes and runs in trot!) but I was not asking at ALL for canter. He would then do this really slow powerful canter but just wouldn't come back to walk, we could get slower and slower and the circle smaller and smaller but that canter would keep going...
He was also really gobby whenever we tried to trot, I am thinking this may be because it doesn't move around in his mouth?
Not something I will be riding him in again I don't think
He was just all over and so "upwards" and pingy, and i was basically completely over horsed despite him being a 13.3 pony
so yep, just wondering what the main differences are between them to get such different reactions? And opinions on a jointed pelham, I feel awful using something that could potentially be very strong and not sure if I'll ruin his mouth? but then again control is always a nice thing to have ....
oh and also these are both used with double reins and I have very quiet hands (instructor says I am much too nice to him and am not doing anything wrong as such to make him so fizzy, its just the way he is, he has one MEGA attitude!)
Thank you in advance for any replies!
