As title. Please could someone explain if there is any difference between a NS Universal and Dutch Gag other than the fact that a Dutch Gag has an extra ring. TIA

I suppose an N/S mouthpiece would be specialised compared to an ordinary snaffle or French link etc.

I would like to know the difference in poll and rein action of the bits.

The ring that the cheek piece fits to is off set on the universal that gives the bit a better feel in the hand the horses take the contact better and are less lightly to over bend that they do in the Dutch gag .
The joint in the universal will be an angled lozenge and the mouthpiece is German silver .

As Goldenstar has said the top ring of the NS is offset which gives a different feel and can help to reduce the head lowering effect of the gag or help horses who drop behind a gag bit. But the third ring on a gag gives additional leverage on the poll if that is what is wanted. The most common mouthpiece for the NS Universal is the trans angle lozenge - although it can also come with a waterford. You can get a dutch gag with pretty much any mouthpiece. The only difference between the NS and the Jeffries Chrisritch pointed you to seems to be a slight additional angle in the lozenge on the NS which should increase pressure on the tongue - although that impression could also be the result of the image angle. The Jeffries mouthpiece is described as copper; the NS is mixed copper and aluminum which might be lighter.

Thanks for the explanation Goldenstar. I googled 'german silver' and apparently it's 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc. It is the same as 'nickel silver'.
