Hi am locking into insuring my horse so i can take him out on hacks but only really want to have him covered for public liabililty incase anything goes wrong. i've heard a few people say that a BHS Gold membership will cover this but having just looked its described as personal liability isurance. whats this?

Don't take this as gospel - but I believe they are one and the same thing - wherever I've looked, at both personal and public, it says protection against damage or injury to a 3rd party.....
Sorry prob doesn't help much as I'm not 100% sure about it....

The best thing to do is ring BHS to clarify. They can be the same thing. Personal liability can be where someone sues you personally, but public liability is pretty much the same thing in that you are personally covered for claims by the "public". There is also personal accident insurance where if you are injured but it's no-one's fault, you can claim on your own insurance (depending on the terms) for such things as a sum for the injury, lost earnings, mortgage cover etc. But do be very careful with these as they are very often tightly drawn- for instance, there is one for "loss of sight". But under the terms of the policy, you actually have to have the offending eye removed! Or arm, or leg, or whatever. Then there are custody, care and control policies, which insure you against claims when you are in a position of responsibility for other people's horses not your own. You can also get rider only policies where you do not own a horse yourself, but ride other people's.

It's all about the "small print". Insurers are in the risk business and they make sure that they are exposed to as little risk as possible, which is perfectly legitimate. The time to clarify just what any insurance covers is when you take it out, not when you want to make a claim. And I'm not an insurer; completely the other side.
