On a roll.lol!!!!I know alot of people that ride their horses on a public road without any road safety test and NO liability insurance???(infact no insurance at all)I have both, ride and road safety (yes it is only common sense but you extend on the basics)and insurance!!!Do you know people that have no insurance???What would happen if they killed somebody through their horse having an episode on a road???What is your opinion of people that ride on a public highway without insurance???Should insurance be made law????I think so!!!

IMO ALL road users should have atleast 3rd Party Insurance........................NO point making it law though as police can't even keep uninsured cars off the roads.

I have insurance, but have never taken any kind of test for a horse. As far as insurance goes, yes I think everybody should have it but where does it end? Should cyclists also have it? Pedestrians in case they cause an accident?

Personally I think yes we all should have insurance, including cyclists and pedestrians. I sometimes worry that if I fell over into the path of a car and caused an acident would I be liable?

The NFU Mutual horse insurance P.L cover covers anyone riding the horse and named riders (i.e. policyholder) to ride horses that they do not own - so the liability would cover an uninsured horse whilst a NFU policyholder rides (if P.L cover is taken out). Under the NFU Mutual premier home policy (contents section) it covers liability for the policyholder and their family if they caused an accident whilst out on a cycle etc. This maybe the same for other insurers but check with them as I only know mine.

have you ever read higway code?????? horses were around before the motor car.......... as horse riders we may be at the bottom of the food chain, but come on why o why do we have to live in ths nammy pammy world of insurance claims............. and it ALWAYS BEING SOMEONE FAULT!!!
IMO people should know and except that riding a horse on road in traffic is inherantly more risky than ............ than driving car........
IMO it's upto the individual what they decide to do............ so if it become law do we have to display insurance disk?, what about MOT?................. speeed camera for trotting.........

not a personnel dig at you

BUT WHAT next????????????

Tis very true what you say!!However i have heard of a cyclist being fined for pedalling to fast(speed camera got them)

If you don't have insurance you could be sued for any damage you cause and as this could run in to tens of thousands quite easily, and in a serious accident millions if you couldn't pay you could be bankrupted as a result.

The CTC (cycle touring club or something) run a similar scheme of insurance to the BHS and recommend that all cyclists have liability insurance.

I have seen cases where pedestrians have caused road accidents including one where a pedestrian stepped out in front of a moped and knocked the rider off and in that case the pedestrian was liable but the claim was paid by a home insuarance policy.

As you say always best to have insurance.

I'm surprised the equine insurers don't offer discounts if you have taken the BHS riding and road safety test as you would be less of a risk on the road and it would encourage people to learn the basics.

It is sensible to have insurance cover and I am afraid that there have been a number of cases recently (such as the Mawhiney case) where the horse owners had action taken against them - if they had not been insured in that case it could have cost them their house and possessions.

If you are a BHS Gold member then you get third party public liability insurance cover to £10,000,000. Make sure that your policy is to £10,000,000 as many are not.
