Currently ride my ex racer in a full cheek, my other horse has ridden in one for 2 years and it worked well, however they’re different horses and I was curious about experimenting trying a loose ring snaffle for my ex racer? There’s no particular reason for me changing bits except I’ve been in the same bit for a long time now, what do you think the benefits of a loose ring? I’ve always not really given them a chance as I’m scared they’ll pinch, but I wonder if it’ll relax my horses jaw a bit as she’s green and maybe giving her a bit more freedom. So really what I’m asking is benefits/drawbacks of loose ring vs eggbutts, d rings, full cheek etc land all there uses really so I have a basic overview :)

Shelby Dennis (I think that’s right) on YouTube has a good bitting video.

I really like loose ring for my cob as he will lean if he gets the chance and they are more fluid so he can’t. I think with the tb I’m going to end up with something like a D cheek piece or hanging cheek

I think the Shires website is pretty good at explaining bits including mouth, rings and metals etc at least it used to be! Their paper catalogue used to be good aswell

A loose ring will give more movement some horses like it some don't, one of my horses goes fine in a loose ring the other one prefers a fixed ring hanging cheek snaffle as it will be stiller in the mouth.

Spend the money and go and see a bitting consultant. It more complicated than just changing the rings of a bit. I find mouthpiece just as much part of the equation.
