I have recently changed yards where my pony has new friends. He enjoys their company too much as now when I try to ride him he rears, broncs and throws himself around to the point where he is just too dangerous to ride. I have tried lunging him but he just drags me around the arena and pulls me to the gate. He turns and challenges me and is aggressive as he just wants to return to his friends. I am at my wits end. Has anyone had this problem before or got any advice?

How long have you been at this new yard?

Sounds like seperationa anxiety, personally I would seperate him regulary from the herd, bring him in, feed him in his stable (if he has one) and let him like the time he has with you.

Hes probably just settling in.

Also incase he has hurt himself hoonying about with his new mates it might be worth a visit from a back person, horses tend not to be aggressive to people. My ex racer started doing this to me and it was the beginning of his kissing spines.

Good Luck

^^this^^ I'd also walk him out in-hand for a while, around his new area. It could be that he is unsure of his new surroundings and finds security and reassurance from his new friends so is unsure of himself when he's away from them. Perhaps if he gets around and about his new territory a bit more he will get more acclimatised and will gain confidence in himself. I'm sure other on here will be able to give you more advice!

hey, my boy used to does this. whats he like riding with his friends? if he is okay then when your out try riding away from them and back getting a little further each time until you can set off on a ride/schooling session together but can do the rest alone, thats what worked for mine but your horse may be complety different.
or slowly seperating them kinda like weaning so they spend less time together and more with you. If he is getting too dangerous to handle I personaly would get a professional in like a intelligent horsemanship asscioate or an experienced instructor to help.
Hope this helps a little. :)

Thanks for the advice. I will try all this. He is absolutely fine with anything I do on the ground. I can catch him, lead him away, do whatever, it is only with riding. I have dentist coming out in a couple of weeks and have had him recently back checked and saddle fitted and everything was fine. I will persevere though! Thanks!
