Thank you all very much for your replies and advise. I was suprised how much more positive I felt after getting your support. I hadn't realized that this almost seems par for the course whilst bringing on a young horse and I guess that most get through it.

I lunged and long reined him yesterday and yes he did start napping in the usual places but that was quickly dealt with- amazing how much more confident I am whilst standing on the ground

My plan is to keep him in work for another fortnight. i'm going to continue long reining him in the dodgy areas and I'll just ride him in company out hacking or in the school. Then I'll turn him away for a few months and see where we are in January.

Fingers crossed!

That sounds a really good plan your working on, really keep up the longreining and make a point of working him through all the things you no he will napp at, by watching his behaviour on the ground it should help you deal with it when you ride him, but dont ride him untill he is absolutely obedient. Good luck and i hope you master him.

thats great news and im so glad you feel more confident !! im sure you will look back at this to years to come and know it made you a stronger rider for getting though it !!!

Let us know the update in January !!
