Thank you all very much for your replies and advise. I was suprised how much more positive I felt after getting your support. I hadn't realized that this almost seems par for the course whilst bringing on a young horse and I guess that most get through it.
I lunged and long reined him yesterday and yes he did start napping in the usual places but that was quickly dealt with- amazing how much more confident I am whilst standing on the ground
My plan is to keep him in work for another fortnight. i'm going to continue long reining him in the dodgy areas and I'll just ride him in company out hacking or in the school. Then I'll turn him away for a few months and see where we are in January.
