I would suggest maybe stress my collie did this after her stroke and she has never dug hole or anything. If the behaviour of your dog has changed i would say see a vet something else may be going on.

He is in controlled Renal failure, and has been for 14mths, we are lucky he is still around and is blood tested every 6 weeks.
Maybe he has some discomfort so i will check with the vet next week.
Thanks

Give him a bone, then he has a purpose to dig, seriously its just down to canine instinct, your lucky he has acquired it late on in life. I live with three diggers and I cant put it down to anything else. They have the run of our garden which is an acre and still dig, usually when I put new plants in!!.

Good luck, once he has started this dreaded habit, there is no going back

The main reason for dogs digging is boredom, my old dog does it a few times when hes not been fit to walk about etc.

I bought him a feed ball, if hes on dry feed then you can put it into the ball.

My youngest digs to hide things from my old dog, or to eat the roots of the grass.

Both are well exercised, walked twice a day, however they will dig if I dont spend as much time with them as they want! lol
