I can feel my horse's digital pulse in all 4 feet every day, the backs always more palpable than the fronts. I've been checking them as a baseline, I have a 3 year old connie who is the perfect weight and is managed very well with his feed etc, but obviously being a native I do worry about laminitis and have become somewhat obsessed to the point where I convince myself they are bounding when in fact they are the same pretty much every day.

Can anyone tell me how hard you are meant to be pressing and what a bounding pulse actually feels like? Even very lightly they are always palpable. Maybe I just have a horse with thin skin... I just checked my own pulse and have even convinced myself it is bounding!

It's not always a case of IF you can feel them but more of a case of how strong and fast the pulse is to indicate that something is wrong.

So if your pony has a soft, steady beat that will be normal and nothing wrong. If it's almost thumping into your fingers and racing you have an issue.

Theres always a pulse, like at your wrist, but just a case of how strong and fast it is.

This might be your horses normal so just monitor for any changes.

If you are on a yard, ask other owners if you can check their horses' pulses for comparison. Do it when they are at rest, you will be surprised how it varies from healthy horse to healthy horse. I have a Cushing horse and nearly drove myself mad this year checking pulses, it really helped me being able to compare other horses' pulses from time to time, especially as the vet was convinced my horse had low grade laminitis and my farrier was adamant he did not!
