ok so a horse is for sale - girl comes to try it and really likes it but wants to do a deal of:

pay half now
Keep with current rider and pay half running costs for 2 months (girl doing GCSE) costing of £1k
then pay rest of money 2 months later

or owner knocks off the £1k and takes a slightly less offer for him
??????

If she wants it she should pay the full amount now .....

then it is up to you if you want to negotiate on running costs for next 2 months.

or depending on how much the horse is and how much owner needs to sell, consider knocking off the 1K for quick sale

I owuldn't do the pay half now route though

Agree with Ben_and_Jerrys, too complicated going down the route of pay half now and half later...what would happen if horse injured itself in that time?!

Pay now, and then agree running costs if current rider to keep riding for another 2 months. Knocking off £1k depends on how desperate owner is to sell.

contract would be written that if anything happened to horse current owner would still get the rest of money

but at 25k dropping £1k aint a lot !

Personally I'd ask them to buy the horse now at asking price and tell them you will throw in a months training livery for free. When that month is up they will be charged £X per week until they collect horse.

ETS - if the horse is 25K then 1K knock off is not unreasonable at all

horse isnt in training with me !!! so wouldnt be a point in doing that ??

my main worry would be horse would do fantastic over next 2 months and be worth more meaning they could be getting horse for a lot less !!

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think you can look at it that way.

You need to sell the horse based on what you think he's worth now.

Horse may be worth more in 2 months time but equally it may blow a tendon/break a leg and be worth dog meat

which is why i would rather just sell him for 24k now instead of half now half later and still paying livery for 2 month s!

so why don't you just sell it for 24K then

That's what i was thinking!! Sell for £24k now, and then if they want to keep the horse where it is for another 2 months then they pay training livery costs

If you really believe that to be the case then hang onto horse for another two months.

Personally though I doubt that a 25k horse is going to change a lot in value in that space of time. If it was me I would either accept 1k less and sell straightaway or hang onto horse for another couple of months if I thought that its value would improve in that time.

What a random OP then!!!

Question was 'shall I do pay half now, half later and split 2 months training OR knock off 1K'

and then when asked you say knocking off 1K is not an option.

Stikes me you just want people to know how much you have sold a horse for!!

Your original post was...

pay half now
Keep with current rider and pay half running costs for 2 months (girl doing GCSE) costing of £1k
then pay rest of money 2 months later

or owner knocks off the £1k and takes a slightly less offer for him
??????

....So owner knocks off £1k and takes slightly less offer for him?

from your intial post - or owner knocks off the £1k and takes a slightly less offer for him ??????

this suggested to me that they had offered you 24k for him now or 12.5k now and 12.5k in two months.

I guess it depends how desperate you are to sell?

oh please why would i want to do that - im in a dilema and thought id ask for help maybe my post was not easy to understand !!

they have not offered to knock the 1k off that was my decision as to be honest its how much it will cost me for 2 months to keep it ??

Sounds like they dont have the money to buy the horse up front, even if you knock off £1k.

You could always make the offer? Surely half the livery will be more than that anyway?

I wanted advice if your going to be like that dont answer !!

When I bought Queenie, she was too expensive for us really. However the people who owned her were friends of ours and we both trusted each other, and they made the offer of us paying half up front and paying the other half in 3 months time (once we had hopefully sold our other pony).

However, this was with people who trusted us and we trusted them, and they are in our pony club so we see them on a regular basis. I think, to trust a total stranger that much is a big thing. However, the system does work, as known from personal experience.

first people who have tried him !!

If I were you I would say they could have him for 24k now or they run the risk of him being sold in 2 months when they are ready to buy.

You can say that the 1k reduction will pay for his training until they can take him home.

So basically, you are considering offering them a £1K price drop if they pay the whole lot now (and then you effectively pay for the upkeep until they pick the horse up - which you would do anyway unless there was an offer on the horse?) I say take it - 1K isn't much in the grand scheme of things, people with that kind of money will be rare at the moment. But agree with above though - don't get into a half now/half later situation - especially with such a valuable horse.

Then your original post was VERY confusing as if they haven't offered to pay £24k then it is not a viable option...the question should have been do i accept a pay half now half in 2 months!!

Personally i wouldn't do it.
