Some of you who have read my posts will know I have an 18 year old shettie stallion who sadly I have to geld due to livery yards no interested in having stallions, where I live there isnt even a number of livery yards you could negotiate with. I bought him as a companion for the cob, otherwise he would have ended up as meat, he has been a serving stallion all his life and his time had run out, he found me.

A couple of vets I have spoken to have said because of his age he would need a GA, which would mean taking him to horspital. Now I have just received a vet whom I have previously used who flushed out my fillies infected tendon sheath and she was 100% sound whilst another vet said just to wash it and bandage it, he has said that he doesnt need a GA and he would come to me and he would knock him out and do him lying down as a normal castration.

Help me decide if you know which is the way to go as I do not want to do anything that may compromise his health let alone his life.

If the vet said that was do-able then why not? If he's fit and well I can't see it being a problem. To be honest its probably less risk then putting him through a GA at his age imo.

Just spoken to the vet again, he will be doing a stitch up inside the tunic which will stop the intestines from falling out (which is the concern at his age) and he said that this is where the sterile environment comes in to play e.g. being in horspital, but he said if you have just clamped and cut the area and removed the testicles, you would have disenfected it anyway beforehand so placing a couple of stitches is not putting the pony in any a greater non sterile environment and he will have antibiotic injections etc etc, I hope I have said this all correctly, anyway poor boy is being done tomorrow.

I would hate to be in a situation where I would have to PTS because I couldnt find anywhere to keep him because he was a stallion.

Vibes for him please please.

hello - latest update - got myself nicely worked up this morning (stressing) cleaned out stable, jays fluid down on rubber floor (just a few squirts), nice new straw down on top of 3 day old new straw, double brushed any no straw areas, washed feed bowl, took down flasks of boiling water, extra water 10lt container, got the 2 LCD lights charged (I do not have any of this at my stables) and at 11am I got a call to say the vet was doing an emergency caeserian on a dog and wouldnt be able to get to me in enough time for me to be at work at 2pm, ugh, so booked it for next Wed (I want it done now).
