Dilemma of a different kind - Money

This may sound a little strange to some but I was after opinions and advice regarding money, more importantly an insurance payout. As some of you may know, Murph was PTS at the end of July. Since then I had some scuffles with the insurance company over payout, which resulted in the end with them paying up nearly all of the full amount. It was never about the money as wasn’t going to claim in the first place, but after they said he “did not meet the criteria” it became a bit of a point to prove (if that made sense, was thinking of a word to describe it and can’t).

So my dilemma now being – what do I do with the money. I do not need another horse, I brought a 2nd one back in March, and we are working well together and getting my confidence up etc (which I feel a bit guilty about as its something I could never get over with Murph). Plus these days, the amount I have would not make a dent in the price of decent horse - which i already have. I thought about a trailer, but I do not have anything to tow it with, I would have to take the test and at present im not going anywhere and have use of one if I do.

Friends have suggested I spend it on Oreon (other ned) as I still have some money to pay off on his saddle but to me it doesn’t feel right as its Murph’s money and I feel it should so towards something solid and worthy rather than being spent on this and that.

So just wondering what you would do, or if you have been in a similar situation. I just have this feeling that if I keep thinking that it has to go on something with a purpose then im never going to spend it and it was a waste of a fight with the insurance company.

Or if you think im being a silly cow and should just go and spend it on as much stuff as I can possibly find in the saddlery - then say so!

Any input is greatly received.

Spend half and save half. Dull I know but at least pay off your saddle and you will have a nest egg, for any horsey (or other) emergency!

Jeni, is there any rush? There will be a brilliant idea just around the corner. If you cant think of anything at this minute, have patience and it will come. Leave it where it is for now and wait for the idea to come to you.
 
Not quite the same but when we got the insurance payout on Cass when she was PTS, I had just finished uni and was starting work in London, and had lots of debt. After lengthy mental turmoil like you, in the end I used it to pay off some of my debt - my thinking was that I couldn't put it towards getting another horse just yet as it would be plain stupid of me to do so (London and money situation), and the sooner I got my debt paid off, the sooner I could get a new horse when the time was right.

Do what you feel is best, but do be sensible financially!
 
If you are wanting to do something with the money that's purely to do with Murph then I'd get a drawing or painting done of him. Then I'd spend some of the rest paying off your saddle and buying new stuff in a saddlery.
 
What about spending it on a tree, I think the ILPH do a memorial tree scheme, where you buy a tree and it has a plaque by it. it grows and provides shade to the rescue horses.

Or perhaps a tree for your garden, or a bench where you can sit a remember him.

Thats a lovely idea.
 
Something to remember him by would be nice like a picture or tree. Then the money that is left you could put in a high interest account and wait til the right thing comes along, which something will.
 
No, there isn't a rush at all, just you know that feeling you get when there is money sat there doing nothing. Also don't want to risk accidently borrowing a bit here and there from it and it going. May move it to its own seperate savings account rather than leaving it in my main one which i do dip into occasionaly.
 
Troggy, Lorian and Troggy's OH got a drawing of him done by PF for my birthday that was 2 days before he was PTS so they beat me to it and lovely it is too

My daughter lost her mare last year and the insurance for her was not enough to buy another horse. This wasn't really an issue as she had another horse anyway, so a similar situation to you. A large proportion went to the vets anyway to pay off an outstanding bill for surgery not covered by the insurance. The rest she did agonise about but eventually it paid for a beautiful bridle for the other horse for showing. Because she had settled the debt to the vet, she was able to afford regular lessons and this has really improved her showing. There were times when I know she felt a bit guilty for using the money on the other horse but life goes on. We have created a small garden with an apple tree where her ashes are buried.

I would second this. If you put it into a thirty day notice account then you won't be able to just go in and take some.
 
I'd be worried about having a tree if i moved or something, plus our garden ain't really very gardeny at the moment, more of a wasteland with random electirc fence posts dotted around where they haven't quite made it to the shed

The ILPH one sounds interesting, will have a look into this.
 
Sounds rather similar, luckily the insurance company paid all the vet bills and even contributed half towards his cremation costs so i only had to use a small part of his payment to pay the other half.

I doubt Murph would mind if i spent it on Oreon or having extra lessons, its me who seems to see it as a bit of a betrayl to him.
