Dilemma - what would you do?

Sorry this is a bit long! We have a mare on loan who has been lame virtually since the day we got her (October last year). She came to us after recovering from a suspensory ligament injury just to hack / do a bit of stressage. She was lame on and off all winter and things came to a head a few weeks ago when enough was enough. I insisted that owner had the horse investigated (she kept the insurance running) to find out what the heck was wrong. I've posted about her problems a couple of times on here already!

After much nerve blocks, scans and x-rays the vet decided that ligament was fine and she had heel pain and last week was surgically shod. Vet said it would take a few days to settle her feet and to trot her up today. Duly did this and she's hopping bloody lame - worse than she was last week. There's no sign of trauma, injury, kicks, cuts nothing.

Reported this to owner who was just 'oh well, give her some bute, box rest her and maybe phone vet at end of week'. That's fine and easy for her to say but horse has had 4 trips to vet / farrier now and is occupying stable that could be used by something that could be ridden. Owner has already said that if she doesn't come sound she doesn't want her back and I'd have to get the ILPH or someone to take her. I think though, that if I pushed it then she would take her back. There would be no issue with her having space - she owns a bloody great farm and livery yard!

I feel guilty that I'm considering getting rid of her but I now feel that I'm at the end of my tether, I haven't ridden the horse in months and I kind of feel that I'm a care home for a duff but lovely horse! OH is doing his nut at how much this is costing, both in time and energy as well as financially for very little return. I don't want to breed from her as she has no breed papers of her own and also I've just bought a foal and have a 3 yr old on the go at the moment so don't really have the space to add more to the collection!

What would you do??

Wine and chocolate for getting this far.....

I would give her back, its OK if its your own horse that is lame etc... But you got a horse on loan to ride and you haven't been able to do so then its not worth all the money and hassle.

Good luck with what you decide to do.

Oh and I would say its best to give her back now before you get even more attached!
xx

Sorry to be miserable but this sounds very much like my horse. Every attempt to surgically shoe her resulted in no improvement or serious discomfort. In my horse's case and in my last horse's, something on the inside was very wrong that could only be seen on MRI. Even if its insured, often parts of thorough investigations can run to over a grand and it doesn't sound like the owner is interested enough to want to get to the bottom of it. I wouldn't spend that amount of money on a horse that isn't even yours. You could try to find a home for her as a brood mare but even that might not be advisable when you don't really know what's wrong with her and if it could be hereditary. I'm afraid I'd have to send it back.

I would definitely give her back immediately. Do you have a loan agreement that you could fall back on? Do you have a notice period?

If so give it, and then arrange to deliver the horse back at the end of it.

She doesn't belong to you - and nor do her problems. I think you have spent a reasonable time trying to see if she could go sound...and it is now time to sent her home.
Better luck with your next horse.

the horse is on loan...legally/financially/morally NOT your problem at the end of the day..

unless u have unlimited land, which it doesn't sound as tho u do, give it back or find it a home as a companion or call the ILPH as the owner said. They may be able to give you advice even if you don't want them to take it.

Best wishes to u and horse.

Don't take any of her crap. Box the horse up and take her to the owner's yard. It is a sad situation for the horse but she's (the owner) being completely unreasonable and taking advantage of you.
