Dilemma/Yards!!

Hi everyone!! Brain is a bit frazzled at the moment!! I had a pony on loan for 7 years and gave him up last christmas. He went off on loan but it didn't work out and he's ended back up with his owner, who is a friend of mine. I only gave him up as the situation I was in at the time - I just didnt have the time or money for him! So now I'm sorted, getting back on my feet and I thought I'd look for a share or something to keep me going til next year when I would be in a position to buy

However, my ponys' owner called today and asked if I'd like him back - he has had various loaners since she had him, none of which have worked out. Now the cons - He is 18, and only 14.3, I competed him in pre nov eventing which was kind of his limit. He has recently developed something looking a lot like RAO and has been on ventapulmin, steroids have been tried etc. I shouldnt really be spending my money on this pony now, especially coming into winter - I should be saving, and moving out and buying a nice 16hh 4yr old as was the plan for next year! However............ the pluses!! He's my boy, I've missed him every day he's been gone, every horse I ride just isnt him, and to be fair to him when I had him he was a star, and also very low maintenance & cost for a horse. I absolutely love this pony. It's brain vs heart at the mo!! What would you do?!!

Secondly, if i do take him I will probably need a sharer to help with time and money, and will need to find a yard that does DIY/assisted DIY pref, has a good size school and is CHEAP!!! I work near Slough but at the moment living near Reading, although the plan is to move to Windsor. Does anyone know of any good, CHEAP yards in the slough/windsor/langley/bracknell etc etc areas?

Hi ya...I'm at a yard in Ascot it's very friendly and has a school..quite large with jumps should you wish to use them, all yr t/o in great fields and they have 2 smaller paddocks, stables are large (14x12) all light and airey....or theres another one in windsor which I am moving to shortly, not sure if they have anymore spaces though but is quite expensive but well worth it the facilties are next to none...

Oh and the current yard is the cheapest I have found by a long shot with the way the yard is too.....i'd certainly recommend it to anyone!
 
Hmmm tricky one. I think you have to ask yourself whether you will feel happy doing things at his level or whether (much as you love him) you might find him a bit limiting? All depends on what you want to do I think. Very difficult and I don't envy you having to decide!
 
I think i would take him back as hes still quite healthy and have fun on him for another year but make it clear that that is what it is and you may need to look for something else next year - it also gives you time to find the right horse for you
 
Redaing your second paragraph makes me wonder whether it's the right time for you to be taking this pony on. What if you can't find a suitable sharer? Would you be really stuffed or would it just be a nuisance?
 
Having a pony with allergies can be quite expensive to maintain if you are on a budget can you afford any vets bills/breathing supplements the pony might need if it was poorly
 
In your shoes I would consider loaning him for a year initially. With careful management you may find that his breathing improves (Global Herbs do some great products which worked for us when steroids, etc, didn't) - you may just have to vary what you do, dressage and veteran showing with some Hunter Trials or WH pony stuff can be as much fun, and less expensive than eventing.

TBH if you would be struggling financially to keep this horse you are probably not ready to afford to take a youngster eventing.
