Dilemna!

I have a big dilemna!!

In January I bought a beautiful 4yo connemara for showing etc and he looked like he had all the promise or a top pony but he is turning out to be very stubborn, he bucks if you ask him to do anything he doesn't want to and its quite serious bucking!

I keep him at the place I bought him from which is a professional show producers yard so they have all the expertise to bring something on like this and I am by no means a novice rider. But I have M.E/C.F.S so with lazy/bucking/messing around youngsters I am starting to really struggle plus my pony has learnt he can get away with virtually anything with me because I don't have the strength to discipline him.

I have been offered a similar connemara who has only just been broken and therefore a long way behind my connemara and although he is a lovely pony, never bucked/reared and the worst thing he does is run away if he is spooked(which I think is fair enough for a baby) However I am starting to struggle with him because I'm just not strong enough to get on and ride him through the spookiness and sillyness. I originally thought it was me being out of practise at riding but I am trying to do my BHS exams and have been doing a course at a local riding school to prepare and have been able to produce results from they're horses.

So I've come to the conclusion its not me but it is the ponys and I who are not getting on basically because with my illness they are too much for me. Do you think I should cut my losses now and sell the pony and wait until maybe next year when I am a bit stronger and maybe be able to cope or should I keep on with the pony have the producers produce him and see where we end up by the end of the season??

Sorry for the essay but I can't seem to solve this one in my head!!!!

Thanks, Cat.

TBH-I think you should sell, get your strength and then try again. YOUR health and safety is a damn sight more important. You need to concentrate on you.
Sorry if its not what you wanted to hear but I lost a friend to CF a few years back. Ponies come and go...but people?

Hello, sorry to hear about your problems with your ponies. i used to have a connemara pony, she sounds just like the one your describing.. stubborn, bucking, running off when led. i know it took a hell off a lot of strength to cope with her and i definately couldnt have done it if i had any health probs.
you could go for the option of the producers carrying on with the pony, but in my opinion connemaras are strong willed by nature and no amount of 'producing' will change that.
and if the ponies are strong at home, they may be worse at shows which would be even harder to cope with.
i dont think the stress of this will be helping your health, heartbreaking as it would be i would think about selling and looking after yourself, your health is so important, and then getting something abit quieter.
or do you have the option of loaning or getting someone else to show/ride for you?

Firstly, good for you for getting on and giving it all a go despite having such debilitating illnesses! You're obviously not the type of person to give up easily.

I agree with what's been said already and I think you know yourself what the answer is. You've done your very best to carry on, but at the moment the ponies are just a bit much for you. Could you loan your current pony out until your health improves? Then maybe you could take on a steady, uncomplicated loan or share horse as well, just to keep your riding going.

Hope it all works out for you!

If you've had all the usual checks done, I'd recommend getting an RI to ride your horse for you to work through his problems or consider selling your pony and getting a school master type.
I have M.E too and needed help sorting out my green horses issues in the school as I just didn't have the energy, balance and strength to do it on my own.

Sorry, but I am afraid I agree with pudpud here. I too have ME and I honestly think that you should be selling and thinking of getting another in a year or two when you may feel stronger. Remember that pushing yourself too hard while you feel 'well' usually sets someone with ME back again.
