Hoping someone can shed some light, I have just got a new horse at weekend and noticed he has a dip almost like a hole under his skin at the bottom of his neck on left side, it is probably the shape and size of a tomato (strange thing to compare to but only thing same size!) and wondered what it could be, it was suggested it could be a torn muscle or scar but wondered if anyone else had an idea and if it was a symptom or result of something more sinister - thanks

I think its to do with a hole in the muscle like a muscle atrophy but I am sure a physio therapist out there would explain it a lot better than me.

Its actually something some horses are just born with and not anything to do with muscle atrophy :) :

'The prophets thumb mark is an indentation in a muscle, usually in the horses neck but sometimes in there chest also. It looks just as if someone has pressed a thumb into the muscle and left a dent. Legend has it that the Prophet Mohammed blessed the foundation mares of the Arab breed by placing his hand on their necks. The mark of his blessing is said to be passed onto their best offspring.'
