Hi, we have a mare on the yard that has a little dip on her neck the size of a thumb print, you can put your thumb into it.

I remember a pony I had years ago had it. and it was called something? Can anyone remember what?

And that its meant to be lucky? Is this right?

Sorry if description not right, it's just really bugging me now. I hate these distant memories that pop up to annoy me.

One of the horses down the yard has one, and some of my horses from the past used to have them.
I know they are called Prophets thumb marks, but how an earth do they get there... I never really thought to how before until you brought this up lol

Yep, Prophet's thumbprint :) Len has one on his neck. I was told it is sometimes a deliberate mark by Gypsies (they imprint their neck when they are first born as a mark of ownership) but I have no idea if that's true or even possible! Would be great if anyone knew :D

I have two with them :) I didn't mean that if you have a horse with a PT it's not going to be a nice one, sorry if that's how it sounded
Just wondered if they (gypsies) ever did it, or if anyone knows how they first acquire them in the first place :D

our old racer had one... sorry to disappoint never won a race(or even did respectably...), got cast on a regular basis just to remind us he could and would pull a face like thunder when u got close to him...
he always was my favorite though (I seem to have a knack for choosing the bad ones!)

I think they're quite common, my horse has a small one.

Someone once told me it was how the foal was lying in the womb (with a hoof pressed against the neck) although in my mind I found that odd as I'm sure a foal would move

I think old folk lore is something about Mohammed testing his arabs and deprived them of water and then when he let them drink he sounded his horn and out of his entire herd only 5 mares came back to him instead of quenching their thirst so those were "marked" with his thumb as they were the only ones worthy of the breeding lines... or something like that, was a while ago I was told!

Maybe those naughty horses with prophets thumb marks weren't prophet marks but the "Devil's Thumb Mark" as I've also heard them named!

One of my horses has one. As far as I know it is to do with the positioning of the hooves in relation to the horse causing the imprint when in the womb. :)
