Can anyone post me a photo or tell me how to tell if a horse has a dipped back, this may sound very dumb but if you dont aask you dont know

Thank you in advance

Do you mean a sway back BT? As in withers and croup higher than the middle of his back? Sunny has a sway back - he is now 23 and when he was younger it wasn't so pronounced. A sway back is quite common in older horses - they lose muscle tone and the back dips down leaving the withers and croup higher. With Sunny, who is a tiny bit croup high anyway (ie his bum is a little higher than his withers) it's a bugger getting a saddle to fit coz they all bridge. I have a good pic of Sunny's back - gonna go and wrestle with photobucket now. Will post it a bit later x

Im not to sure, someone has said my horse has a dipped back and i dont know how to tell he is only 5 he is a little croup high again for some reason but withers do not look pronounced, I will have to take a photo at the weekend on flat ground and show you if you wouldnt mind as it is worrying me as its something i knw nothing about, thank you for takign the time to answer me

My boy had a very pronounced sway back. He always has but it's obviously got worse as he has got older. I can't find any photo's of him without rugs or tack on at mo but I'll take a pic of him later on and PM it to you if you'd like.

OK mine has a hollow back (shows up better in this photo than usual hence why I have used a post bath photo where he looks messy):

It does not bother him at all until you are jumping 1.50 tracks weekly (he would get a bit stiff in his back and can then rub a pole with his stomach). While it is a conformation fault it does not necessarily come into play if you are not using a horse to the level at which it would affect them. If it was not for a conformation fault like this he would be worth a stupid amount I could not afford

I do make sure I keep his back nice and strong and do lots of work long and low...it has improved a bit from when I took him on (muscled up) and hopefully will continue to do so!

I've got this pic, it's not side on and he has a rug on but you can still see how pronounced it is. I'll get a better one later on.

This horse was on our yard until earlier this week when he went to a new home. His back looks appalling, but he's perfectly happy and loves life!

Thank you all, I am booking a back person to come out and have a look but have a had person look at him this weekend and apart from being bum high again cant see anything wrong so mind a little at rest now
