Dirty bottom.

The horse not me!

I was fiddling about with his tail this morning, and noticed that underneath it is incredibly dirty!!, Its even on the underneath of his tail.

What should i was it with?? It must be uncomfortable as well.

I take it i should use something a bit more sensitive then normal shampoo, its going to need a right good scrub.

Also is it ok to wash it, when he lives out 24/7 and the weather is really not warm if i dry it with a towel after??
 
My boy always has a dirty bum & it gets a bit crusty too. (Yuk!)

I wash it with Hibiscrub & warm water & hold the sponge under there to soften it all. I would wash it before you ride & let him dry naturally as it's rather cold to turn him out damp otherwise. You don't want him to get frostbitten there!
 
thats what i was thinking, crusty bum, or icy bum lol.

I shall have to have a go at it with some hibi scrub, he'll be in for a bit of a shock when i get back up there on sat, its funny though as his tail is so thick, i think its heavy and weighting it down, as he always has a minging tail too!! :s
 
remove with warm water and soap, then apply vasaline every couple of days, with the tail, either pull it or tack the underneath top parts and put in a band.. so they run down the middle, this should keep them out of the way.

my mare is a total skank... legs tail crack.. im not sure how shes does it!
 
I would personally avoid hibiscrub as it's very harsh. Try washing your hands in it everyday and see what it does to them! If you do use it, always make sure it's very thoroughly rinsed off. My boy has runny poos as he has gut damage from bute, he also lives out. When I have to wash I use a very gentle shampoo (mine is an oatmeal one), rinse well, dry and apply lots of baby oil. The baby oil seems to help stop it sticking. What a lovely job on a freezing day!
 
baby oil or vaseline - i have some baby oil at the yard already, so will apply that.

Shall look into baby shampoos instead of hibi scrub.

Might wash his tail and pull it as well, that what i had started today when i noticed the crust lol.

Would it help if i put his tail in a plait, but then i guess it will add weight.
 
One of the 2 ponies we recently acquired had a sloppy bum for a few days when he first arrived which I put down to lots more grass than he was used to (other is a native, was no problem for him), it soon settled and is not sloppy now but it did leave a crusty bum at the time! I used just a terry flannel with warm (not hot) water but no soap in case it irritated - the terry loops help shift the crusty bits very easily, allowed to dry and then used a little organic beeswax based nappy cream over the area, really helped stop it sticking.

i use baby wipes, babyoil and a damp flannel. he hates it though and tries to kick me!

lol, i dont think teddi will mind.... its gonna need a bit more then baby wipes though i think lol

Flannel sounds a bit more scrubby then a sponge, have some old ones here.
