Something very strange is happening to Lexi's colour.

Her mum was bright chestnut, her dad was very dark bay.

When I bought her as a 3 year-old she was bright red chestnut. I don't remember any patches of anything else then.

Since then I have noticed darker brown areas in her coat - particularly obvious when she is clipped. Last winter the biggest one was on her flank and about the size of my hand.

This year she is 6. Her summer coat is coming in and she definitely has a dappled dark brown undertone to her coat. Makes her look dirty when the light catches her - I'm not too keen on it!!

Has anyone else had a chestnut horse change colour? Will it get worse as she gets older (that seems to be the trend at the moment)?

Yes my TB Arnie went like this too.
He was bright chestnut but with one dark spot on his bottom. He was 6 when i bought him. Over the years he gained a few more.

I also remember a show horse, Drayton Crown Jewel he also had them.

Arnies father had a funny name - cant spell it, however, its medical term was mole as he too, was a chestnut and he had a few brown patches on him.

My chestnut horse (with flaxen mane and tail) has a couple of black spodges on his face & back which seem to have got darker over the years. Now he's over 20 though he's getting more grey than black! (all over his body and especially over his eyes)
