Hello all, Im just wondering if anyone has any advice for me please. My young pony seems to be getting dirty crusty eyes, just at the bottom where it seems to gather, its not infected at all and his eyes dont look sore or irritated. I have been bathing them everyday but it doesnt seem to make much of a difference. Before I call the vet out I was wondering if you guys had any advice. Thanks Carol xx

It could be that the cold winter winds are making his eyes water and the crustiness that you see is just the dried salt from his tears. But eyes are so very precious that I wouldn't take any chances. If he has this all winter there is a chance that he will develop a dermatitis in the skin under the eyes and that could pre-dispose him to infections like conjunctivitis. If it was me, I'd try gentle daily cleansing with plain cooled boiled water. Remember to use different swabs for each eye. I find the little pads that come in a long tube for wiping babies bits and pieces are great. Use them just once and chuck them. If I felt that this wasn't helping, I'd get the vet out for reassurance x

Thanks for your replies, yes his eyes do run and his field is quite exposed, when I had him stabled overnight his eyes were fine? Mmm now what to do, thanks again

My pony has a similar problem. Last winter her eyes were constantly teary, like she was crying. She lives out all year, got the vet out who couldn't find a problem and prescribed some eye drops to attack any infection she might have. This solved it and her eyes were fine over the summer - apart from the obligatory fly irriations. Recently I've noticed that she's getting crusty eyes again, less teary this time, and just a bit sleety. They seem as open as usual.

She also have some small white marks in both eyes, they're not ulcers (as far as I know, I've seen a few ulcers and it doesn't look like them), I think maybe they're old scars?

Sorry for rambling on, but you're not alone, I think it's an exposed field thing. You know if you stand around in the wind your own eyes start watering a bit.

Yes I think your right, the cold wind must be awful in their eyes. Im washing them every day, just feel sorry for the poor wee mite. Might have to get some glasses for him

The vet is coming out to check them just incase. Thanks again

You know they invented 'doggles' for dogs, we need for horse ones! Got the vet coming out on Monday to do the other two's teeth so will get her to have a look then and maybe get some drops. Forgot to mention that my pony is 24 years old.

We recently had a similar problem with a 7month old foal. Our vet said her tear ducts were blocked and may have become inflamed. four days of bute (to reduce the inflammation so the ducts would unblock) and bathing with salt water and daily Goldeneye (from Tesco) ointment resolved the problem very quickly.
