My horse has come back from loan, looking like he hasn't been groomed since they took him. He's usually a lovely bay colour, but looks grey he's so greasy! I spent a good hour yesterday removing all the dead, matted clumps of hair (nice  ) and brushing to clean him up as much as poss.

What's the best way to get this grease out - aside from a good warm bath with a squirt of fairy liquid?

I think it might have to be a nice warm bath! I bought some Equimins citronella/anti fly shampoo in the summer (was free with my fly spray, really) and it's fab, brings the coat up beautifully and gets rid of all the yucky grease.

Unfortunately I can't carry heavy buckets, so I'd have to smile sweetly at the stable lads to bring them over for me! If I can find the time this week or on the weekend I'll try :)

Think yourself lucky that is all your horse came back with. My mare returned thin and covered in lice after going to what was I thought a good temporary home!
I would check your horse over just in case, especially if you think her has not been groomed. My mare was being ridden up to the day before I collected her and yet they failed to spot she had lice and lots of them!
Fairy liquid is the best solution to getting the grease out of the coat and warm water too. If he is as bad as you say though it may be best to give two baths. One with fairy liquid to get the majority of the grease out and then some mild shampoo afterwards.
You probably know this already but he will need rugging up if you bath now if he is being turned out due to losing that grease as it has gone quite cold now.
Good luck and I am sure he will soon be looking as good as new x
