My horses tail is disgusting, it has big dried gloops of black crap on it and its generally horrid

i have cleaned it before but its just the same after a day or 2
Am planning on scrubbing it tomorrow (weather permitting) was wondering if i should plait it and tuck it under in a folded plait when shes turned out in the day?? does anyone do this??

I do this - my mare has a huge tail and it gets pretty minging especially in the summer when she comes in season. The best thing I have found is a tail bag or wrap that I leave on for turnout. Mine is like this http://www.bestfriendequine.com/tailwrap.html and you plait it in - I was sceptical at first but it works really well.

Just plaiting it should make a difference, and plenty of coatshine on a clean tail will stop the crud from sticking on again quite so fast

Oh I feel your pain

My mare has a black tail but if I just leave her to it when she is in season, she gets huge white stripes through it which are impossible to clean off. Prevention is far easier!

it takes less than 5 mins to dunk and wash through and rinse , some nice tesco shampoo 88 p per bottle! remember to clean the fillet string or leg straps on a weekly basis!

Baby oil!! Its cheaper than mane and tail!! I can keep my ponies tail clean for days with this, i spray loads on, brush it through and it stays clean snd shiny for ages, repeat every couple of days!! Muck slides off it.

All well and good in a temperate climate, I have 3 skanky mares and temperatures have only recently staggered above zero for the first time since November. So skanky AND frozen into popsicles- nice

Washing my lot is out of the question

I plait tails, loosely from the top, and then just band them, if I had to contend with mud in addition to the rest of it I'd be tying the bottoms up too.
