My 20 year old mare is on bute but ive heard bute can cause problems if it used regularly? Is there anything else i can put her on? ive tried devils claw but i dont think it made a difference

I agree with amymay. My 22 year old has been diagnosed with some liver damage and the vet is still happy for me to give her bute as regularly as I like - daily if need be - for her arthritis. She is a pony so with luck (!) she will last another ten years (even though she has the liver thing, cushings and the arthritis). He said something else will get her long before the bute causes any problems and if you are worried about it feed danilon as it is more gentle on their stomachs.

At twenty I would be cautious about changing anything that's working well for the horse.
However Danilon is a good drug and kinder to the tummy than bute so better for long term use .
Metacam is another that can be used , the person to disscuss this with is your vet.

Its good to know what side effects there are but it doesnt mean your horse will get them just be aware. It worked very well for a while on my old boy, if the benefit outweighs the risks or problem and makes them more comfy so bute it should be. Good luck.

Absolutely the benefits for me certainly out weighed the possible side effects. I was feeding danilon as my boy won't eat bute. Not even in jam sandwiches.!!! Up until recently he was going really well on it but had to give an extra packet as he had to move yards which he then developed a reaction too. We're just giving him a few months break n then try reintroducing it slowly in the hope that the allergy does not return. My boy was 15 when he started on long term use. You just have to determine whether the benefits out weigh the possible side effects. Good luck n try not to worry if ur still concerned have a chat with your vet I'm sure they'll be able to reassure u x
