I woudnt be surprised too much if I sent a horse away and it came back less weighty, if it was our chap (who incidentally is for sale lol) then he would drop weight with any change in routine or scenery.
He would also come back just as nervous as he would have no idea where he was?
The lost shoe isnt great, but this should really have been sorted by people who had him at the time (the sorter outer!).
The lost weight and nervousness is all part and parcel of the horse going elsewhere, getting worked and probably throwing it way off track because it was having to do something different.
I would have a gentle word as obviously it is the reputation of the person who you sent him to at stake....he may be unaware of the problems?
That and all this hippy mumbo jumbo riding your horse with a dental floss bridle is SOMETIMES a pile of crap....
Why send a horse away to go and do all the 'join up' stuff (am using that term lightly) with someone else?
You are right though...I am gobsmacked at who it is and I would threaten going to H&H unless he sorts it out.
I would then encourage these people to sell there horse to someone that knows what they are doing and buy something more suitable for them. By the sounds of things they should buy a rocking horse.
Sounds quite familiar. We have just had a new horse on to our yard who was supposed to be on full livery at a "well known riders" yard and has come to us looking like skin and bone
!!! Its so sad because the owner was struck down with a long term illness and couldnt visit/ride. As soon as she was well enough to visit she was v v shocked at his conidition, as were we. Now hes on our yard he gets all the love and feed he deserves!! My opinion of the rider has sunk dramatically!
If I were you Id suggest she trys to get some explanation and money back!
I do feel sorry for them as they seem to try their best for this horse ,it is so difficult ,what did the trainer say ,have they watcher the owner ride the horse? I hope they sort it out
Would be interested to know who the horse was sent to.
With regard to the shoes, it is vaguely possible that the horse was only shod on the front whilst it was away, and therefore may have only lost one shoe, which is more reasonable than 3. However, if the remaining shoe is on the back, then that idea is out of the window!
umm, could u pm me 2 and let me know, have a mate who is going to send her horse to a behaviour specialist, would hate her to send her lovely horse to this place, many thanks
I havent read all the posts but Ive got to say what kind of service were they providing for £500 pw, were they feeding it gold nuggets or something!
I sent my old mare to a supposedly 'dressage' yard for a bit of a straighten out. She came back with girth galls from where they hadnt grooomed her properly. I'd gone to see her several times and she looked seriously depressed. I vowed never to send a horse away again. For that kind of money I'd expect someone to come to me so 'yes' I would definitley have words.
Personally I havent got a lot of time with a lot of these 'behaviourists'. Im sure some are very good but for every one of those another 5 have jumped on the bandwagon.
There is nothing to beat spending time with your horse just 'messing' with it. I've sat in the stable/field with a magazine and some sarnies many times. I loved the comment someone made about a 'dental floss bridle' it summed up what Im trying to say perfectly.
To be honest; I had exactly the same situation at my yard. Owner bought a horse against my advice, horse was totally unsuitable for novice owner; horse was left with "trainer" (alternatively known as dealer with little scruples) and cost the owner 2 grand in training fees. Horse came to us to board here, quite obviously still unsuitable and even the dealer said he hadn't made much progress with him.......this was in June last year. Horse was taken out twice to be lunged, owner bust one of his tendons and since then the horse has barely been out of the field unless I take him out for the farrier, vet etc.
You know what? You just can't tell some people and often they are beyond help! If it was me I'd keep my nose out and leave them to it. It's their mistake, not yours.
I would be very interested to know whom this trainer is though....so if you have a spare moment could you PM me too please.
I have to say that sending the horse off to be ridden was not the answer if the horse behaved for other people, and just the owner. And she should of sent the horse somewhere she could go and visit every other day and work with while the trainer was working with her horse.
I do retraining of problem horses and often find its not the horse but the owners, and often while training the horse we insist the owners come up and we teach them how to work with the horse. This would of benefitted her more. Simple changes in stable management and routines can have amazing results, such as how they handle the horse on the ground. I would of been disgusted if I got my horse back like that after spending money like that.
Personally I would be too embarrassed to return a horse in such a condition, especially for 500 a week and from a reputable trainer (with said reputation to uphold). However, and this may sound harsh (and I certainly don't agree with it), I've noticed that people don't bother with horses that aren't their own. BOF has sent horses away for selling / trying out and they invariably come back looking far worse than when they left.
Would you mind PMing me too?
I think people can sometimes be very intolerant of Novices getting things wrong. Unfortunately, adults coming to horses with no prior experience often learn the hard way
It sounds like she has been doing her best to sort things out and has been nieve.
If you have time to pm me too I'd be grateful. I wouldn't send a horse away for training, but I might for 'starting' and well warned is well armed and all that
