Before 8 this morning, OH got a call from another driver to say two horses were on the bypass. That's not too far from our place, and I grabbed up a couple of headcollars and dashed off to see if I could of assistance if they weren't ours....
Luckily they weren't! Two youngsters by the looks of things and a nice couple had stopped, and used leadreins to make halters. The head collars were welcomed!
They had to leave witch was perfectly understandable and I stayed with the officer there are they were a bit of a handful.....and it was a tad busy...
Meanwhile, other officers were trying to track down possible owners, and I got onto the phone and asked folk to spread the word, got it on the radio etc etc (whilst still hanging onto the lunatic who was getting more and more frantic) my sis brought our pony's bridle which made a huge difference! I'd already been bitten and jumped on a zillion times already. After about an hour and a bit, and no luck.....I suggested (seeing as local horse rescue said they couldn't help and neither could the RSPCA) they come to my place, a couple of miles up the road, but to get there we had to go up a very busy road.....
A lovely chap brought us both tea (very welcome!) and Officer John (first name terms at this point!) said they were sorting a rolling road block to get us there, the poor ponies were obviously not used to traffic and we wanted to get there in one piece....
Sooooo off we went (John had the quieter one, not used to handling horses but doing very well
) with a patrol car ahead and one behind, holding back the traffic, thank god, this chap (nicknamed Knobber at this point!) was doing a merry old dance on the end of the bridle...
Approaching the garage, he got a message to say a local instructor had offered to come and collect them and give them a stable for the night, hooray!
In the end, we met the lorry at the garage, coaxed them in and off they went, safe.
The horsey network had been awesome at offering suggestions, but also Lincolnshire Police were fab, concerned with the welfare of the ponies and other road users, could have been soooo nasty, that road is horrendous.....
They thanked me lots for lending a hand and bringing the head collars etc, but of course I stayed to help, I'd hope someone would do the same for my horses too.
This is the good bit, me and John needed a lift back to our vehicles, and as 300 cars a minute were going by, there was me, being helped into the back of a police car by an officer and he got in the back too! (the front seats were already occupied....)
A friend summed it up later when I had a reviving cup of tea at my instructors yard (lesson of course cancelled)
'Local teacher seen getting arrested....'
