Hi folks thanks so much for your support. She's doing very well, been down tonight to do the necessaries, so at the moment all I can say is it's great for my diet, I don't feel much like eating dinner when I get back. Her knees are still about double the size they should be and there's a very suspicious looking lump just below the fetlock on left hind that looks like a bone chip to me,or something that shouldn't be there, but I'm not an expert. A good deal of swelling is going down and I just keep finding more and more places that I have to bath. She's getting used to the gap in her bottom lip so is not spilling so much food (her biggest nightmare). Good news is that the police seem to have a pretty good lead against culprits, just need to convince witness who is pretty young to give a statement!!. Most experienced Vet is due out tomorrow to check her over and decide whether she needs to go for xray's etc so will let you all know how we go. Once again thankyou for all your thoughts please keep them coming in, we need them; and I'll keep you posted. Votes for luckiest horse alive!! and I honestley believe that because she thought she couldn't win sexiest bum of the year in the village after her KS op against the racing stables' she's gone for the (I can beat that scar!!). Thank you all for your support.

What nasty people to do this to her, I never understand why someone would open a gate and let a horse out to obvious danger on a road.
We have had much worse injuries than this heal very well, so don't panic, I can send you a pic of an eye one last year which had 9 staples and now has no scar at all.
The antibiotics will be doing their job and the vet appears to have worked miracles getting that lot to hold together.
The hardest part is how long she will be off, looking at the extent of the damage quite some time. She is very lucky to be alive, cattle grids are lethal objects to horses as a rule.
Something to try in the meantime at your yard is a rape alarm fixed to a gate or her door. You need fishing line which is near invisible and all you do is secure the alarm out of sight, hook the line loop over the door/gate etc and when it's opened an ear splitting screech that results when the pin is pulled out scares the hell out of them.
They are very effective believe me!
It may just prevent any trouble happening again...
Fingers' crossed the healing continues and they find no fractures.. Hugs to you, I'm sure you're in need of them..

Now that's a very good idea but I'm not very awake when I go down there in the morning (about 6) so think I'd forget about the fishing line, I even manage to forget her bute so have to make a second trip - but tempting. I have padlocks everywhere now and the yo now allows his collie to actually sleep in the same barn so that's just another thing they've got to get past. He's fine if you know him, but god love you if he doesn't.

How absolutely bl00dy awful for you, I cannot begin to imagine how gutted and angry you must feel. I hope they catch who was responsible and shove there legs down a cattle grid, evil bas**rds.

I hope she has a speedy recovery and there is no more damage other than superficial.xx

Your poor, poor mare. What an absolutely dreadful thing to have happened.

I'd be camping down there if I were in your shoes - I'd be terrified of it happening again.

Everything crossed that she makes a full recovery.

At least she was found quickly. Sounds like shes a lucky girl. Some one tried to steal my friends horse in the night and she got scared and ran away down a cattle grid. She still has a big lump on one leg, but is 100% sound and happy. I woner if they could put some kind of tape at the edge of grids that glowed so the horse might jump it?
