Well we'll try the good bit first!!

Last Saturday Flo and I did our first intro event together (she did 2 in the spring with a pro rider), and had an absolutely fab day.
It was wet and slippy but she didn't turn a hair.
Did a reasonably good test in something resembling a ploughed field, just tapped 2 SJ fences behind with a really confident round, and had a really confident grown up XC round over a small but tricky course (2 water fences, bank, trakhener, steps).

Then had a slightly hairy SJ outing during the week where I decided to let the handbrake off a bit (but stupidly forgot to hold in to the front end) meaning we really hurdled a couple, and chipped in an extra stride to a couple more, before I wised up and started to ride properly.

I did do some more jumping the next night though to make sure I hadn't frightened her, and she was her normal confident self.

Well anyway,....here goes for yesterday's saga.

First point to note..she screamed for her stable companion all day.
Note to self...do not taken them out to the same comp again for the forseeable future, as don't know how much this lack of concentration had to do with her lack of success.

Thought she did as nice a test as prev week (and on far better ground), though the 2 canter 0's were slightly banana shaped due to other mare being in the warm up area (I tried my hardest to correct, but only so much can be done with the judge watching and no whip in outside hand). Got 6 marks worse though when scores put up (immaterial though really in the end.

On to SJ...
Warmed up fairly well except for 1 spread fence where we missed completely. Jumped plenty more after that though and going well off a long or short stride.
Once we got into the ring though and had jumped first fence nicely things began to deteriorate. My fault had apalling turn into 2nd fence and chipped in short one, disunited landing so had to just push on into 3 as not enough space to correct. The next fence was the double and was fairly deep into the first part (upright) so she shuffled in a second stride and cleared second part (spread). Five and six were an even 5 st rel dist, so jumped 5 well, sat down and ride for the 5, and nothing happened, so got 5 and a short one though cleared fence. Jumped 7 OK and rolled pole at 8 (as on curve from 7 and I don't think she saw it until the last minute).

So..pretty bad SJ as not going forwards, but still telling myself that the XC would be OK as would be going faster and not looking for strides and might switch on more.

Xc warmup fine, charged out of start box, 1 was OK, sticky into 2 as was downhill approach at an angle, but jumped it, 3 OK, next was double of rollers which she jumped though chipped in short one and felt v awkward, next 2 absolutely flew, then through small gap to immediately jump log and run into the water, out of the water and jump drop with ditch behind (all really bold and confident),...then the wheels fell off.

Next fence was sloping sleepers and pole with a downhill approach and drop after, not the nicest of fences, but not large in terms of size. Slammed on the brakes, got a smack and came in again (thinking that now she had had a look would be OK) and same thing. Had to let next rider through, gave him decent time, then represented, and she v stickily jumped. Cantered fine across the next field to a rel small trakhener, and she refused to even consider it, so had to walk home with only 3 more fences to go.

I have to admit I did ask the steward could I jump the XC practice fences before she was put away and she jumped them fine. Didn't want to leave things on such a bad note.

So where do we go from here..

My friend (who won a PN yesterday (so well done B)), has offered her XC fences to school over this week, and OH will bring his horse too (to see if she is being nappy or not). OH has also offered to take me to trainers also, to see if he can put his finger on a loss of confidence in either or both of us.

I am half tempted to have her back checked as well, as she was stretching out her front legs like a cat (odd description I know, but thats what it looks like) when taken off the lorry, also has small patch of fur removed from above her eye during the week (possibly cast).

So...
Reasons for disaster yesterday..
1. nappy individual who only jumped properly the XC fences that were heading back towards the lorry park
2. new venue, lacking confidence still even though behaved v grown up last week
3. possible physical problem with back +/- loss of confidence after bad SJ round on Wed.

Have just realised this has turned into "war and peace".
Big pat on the back to anyone who gets to the end without screaming, and any feedback greatfully received (even if its just to say chin up - these things happen).

I could enter the last intro of the seaon which is in a fortnight, but at the moment am inclining towards backing off a bit, and doing some small stuff, even poss a couple of hunt rides. An alternative could be to ask trainer to ride her in the intro and end the season hopefully on a better note (not as satisfying as riding her myself, but better than nothing perhaps)??

That's baby horses for you I'm afraid! It will get better though, I am sure. My advice would be to possibly not enter the intro simply because if you end on a bad note although she will not remember it, you will have all winter to stew over it and work yourself up about it prior to the start of next season.

It could just be one of those things - get her looked over, and have a lesson and take it from there. Don't be too down about it, we all have off days (sadly - do these horses not realise how much time effort and money this eventing lark costs us?!).

Whoo that took some reading!
I would definitely get her back checked if she is jumping differently to normal.
Then find some lower level HT and do them, preferably as a Pair with your other half to get her going boldly again.
Once you feel she is jumping nicely on her own round a HT course ask your trainer to take her round an Intro.
Carry on jumping bigger Ht courses yourself if you feel happy.
We have always had a plan B which is if it goes pear shaped, go down a level until it doesn't..
Chocx won't do Novice until C feels totaly happy he is confident at PN, so his planned move up has been shelved for now until he gets totally over his nasty fall a few weeks ago.
It sounds to be a combination of possible cast causing sore back, loss of confidence in you after pro rider, and just plain old inexperience!
Don't let it get you down, you'll get there, just by a slightly different route in the end..

sorry to hear you had a bad day, It could be down to any one of the reasons you listed or a combination of them. The stable mate wouldnt have helped! My horse is a bit like that but it effects his dressage not his jumping, he gets really tense and Silly and now as i am at a yard on my own i just dont take anything else if i am doign dressage with him, He is ok Jumping once in the ring/at the start box as he gets "in the zone" but is a complete nightmare during warm up and in the lorry!

I would have checks done to make sure she is ok physically then have some lessons SJ and XC, maybe doing some Hunter trials to build both of your confidence back up, with plenty of time to practice SJ over the winter.

Good luck, im sure she will be fine

I have almost definitely rulled out entering the intro myself (for exactly the reason you said), but still considering (if OK physically) trying to have trainer ride her.

That will give us the winter to bond, and to regain any lost confidence.

She is a 6yo, but only 5 in terms of experience, as she missed all of last summer with bruised foot, so can understand green-ness if that is all it is.

Thanks

Fiona

Honestly meant to keep it short, but felt like I had to explain background as well. Sorry again for the essay.

No HTs really around here at all, but lots of hunt rides, low level 2 phases etc, so I can def find things to go to.

There is one intro left in Ireland this year (on the 8th Sept), so can't see it happening really, though I would have a much happier winter if trainer did manage to ride her at it and she went well.

Understand completely about having a plan B ready, unfortunately I don't seem to be able to make my mind up.

She behaved so out of character, I'm struggling for answers as to "why", never mind the "what next"!!

I so wish that we had only taken the one horse on Saturday, but my OH pleaded with me could we take his horse as well, as he has a tough PN coming up next weekend, so would have felt guilty and selfish saying no.

Wish I had though, as will never know how many of our probs were due to the other mare being there as well.

Aww, was looking out but didn't see you. What a shame, sounds like she did most of the tricky bits. Has she jumped a trakhener like that before? If I recall it was a thin pole on top? T'murry is very good, but they tend to jump that thick log better.
Such a shame, but does sound like the rest of the course didn't go too badly. Personally I would get her back checked then send her off with the trainer to get a good run to finish then play about over the winter,.

Your sister was in the SJ warmup at the same time as me on her coloured horse. She XCed much earlier than me though.
The trakhener at T'murry is poss easier, but was jumped downhill so that made it more spooky. She sailed over it though.
Had a "backwards" head on after the previous fence on Saturday though, so it would probably have had a be a v straightforward fence to get her going on again.

Come on guys!!
189 readings, and only 4 replies.
Am looking for advice here.
I can put up little video clips if it helps at all.

She wasn't in season or feeling a bit hormonal was she? Mares can be funny like that. You might find she's absolutely fine next time.

Hormones aside this would be my advice:

If it was me I would take her XC schooling (in very determined mood and with leads/help on the ground if necessary) and review after that. If she goes well I would have a go at the other intro. If not so good I would try and find some other places to go schooling and find some unaffiliated hunter trials / ODEs to go to and enter the novice class to give her experience and confidence.

If you're worried about her back then get it checked so at least you can rule that out as a possible reason. Babies do have these days so try not to get too wound up about it; it took me 10 minutes to get my baby mare near a ditch the first time, and our first attempt at schooling was not exactly a great success (no steering and even had rears at water!), but 3 months on and she's great and loving it. I think you have to accept that with youngsters it does go wrong sometimes (often even!) and not get too stressed about it, but at the same time it can't become a habit. So lots of practice over little things (eg. out hacking if you can), positive riding and not taking no for an answer would be my approach. Yes, think about possible reasons for her behaviour, but don't turn them into excuses - she needs to learn to go wherever and whenever you say.

Hope that helps...

Good luck!!
