It sort of chooses you. I.e. I go for what I'm best at! I love the buzz of eventing but if I have a horse particularly good at one disipline then I will likie that for a while!
I think I've ended up with BD & BSJA as dr & sj are easier to get lessons in ie all you need is an arena, an instructor & some jumps. Whereas xc you need to go to a course, meet the instructor there, have the right ground conditions & weather etc & it's all a lot of hassle.
My xc skills (if that's the right word for them...) are now so poor compared with the other 2 that it seems daunting to try to catch up. Also when competing, you can time dr to the minute, turn up, do your test & bu**er off, whereas eventing is ££££ & you're stuck there all day. Altho eventing does look quite fun & sometimes I'm tempted to book a schooling session, then I realise that I've got no idea what boots to put on the horse, etc & can't be bothered with studs & I remember that I'm actually quite pants at xc & decide to stick to what I know!!
Thats interesting S_J, If I had a horse that couldn't do what I wanted it to do I'd sell it instead of changing disciplines and buy one that could do it.
I think that what started it all off was my pony club- eventing was the 'in' thing- all the super cool people did it. Our DC bred and owned eventers (she bred Two O Two ) and we had Lucinda Green and Ants McKeowan training our pony club, so the whole PC was very very focused and serious about its eventing. So I naturally wanted to become one of the 'cool' people and get onto the eventing team!
Then when Andrea Verdina (Italian event team) moved into our yard next door, when I was about 12, I found him so amazing and inspiring that I was then determined that I was going to do nothing else but event! His yard was the only yard in my area at the time so I worked there at weekends/in the hols!
And it was at his yard that I found Trevor- (bay in my sig) He had come to Andrea's yard to be evented and sold and Andrea got me to ride him when I was working one weekend.
I loved him and had him on loan for 6 months before buying!
At my first PN with Trev and he jumped two Intermediate fences backwards without hesitation. I was so thrilled and he then proved to be the ultimate XC machine quite happily skipping round any course-we did a few Intermediates and one stars as well.He also pulled me into the ranks of the 'supercool' status (from being a nobody!) in the pony club when he came 2nd Individual at the Pony Club Areas and qualified for the PC Champs
So thanks to Trev/the pony club/Andrea I can think of nothing else but eventing for the rest of my life
I do indeed!! *Wails loudly** I was such a bad rider at the time, yet he did it all,. I SOO did not appreciate him enough! Now I realise that he was worth his absolute weight in gold!
AV is somewhere in Gloucestshire now I think! He has given up eventing now- and is mainly a dealer of SJ'ers. He has a website www.avsporthorses.com
God I hope that I will be BE'ing in 08- you know what my horses are like these days
What about you? we want to see you out and about eventing on Ernie!!

Good question, mum and I were just discussing our options...will PM you
Ermmmm used to be into the WHP, but then judge told me that my pony was too ugly
and I responded in a similar manner (she was rude about my pony!!) So decided to try eventing and sort of went from there... tried dressage and show jumping but didn't really enjoy it that much (HATE doing jump off turns so was fed up being stuck as the slowest clear! and dressage didnt provide enough of an adrenline rush haha!)
So really thanks to the ugly pony... who was pretty awesome xc
I grew up in central africa and the way our show season ran you had to be a real all rounder. We evented in the Spring and the summer shows had some dressage and showing and a lot of show jumping, so I did everything.
I do seem to do a lot more dressage now but also work on a showing yard and hope to get back eventing at some point
I don't really have enough time to keep an event horse fit so I have a dressage horse. I do love dressage though I sometimes wish I could go for a good gallop and jump. My new years resolution is to teach my horse to jump. I taught him to hack this year so it will be jumping next year!
We have a horse bred to show jump. He was a little 'wild' when we had him so consentrated on ground work for around 12 months. He now competes at Novice level dressage (occasionally) & has done very well. He also still has an awsome jump. We haven't tried x-country with him yet but I can see that at some point we will & then will probably do some eventing..... at the moment though we consenrate on show jumping.
I used to love jumping, but when I bought Hannah and slowly started bringing her on (she was my first horse), I looked forwards more to my flatwork lessons than my jumping ones all of a sudden. I loved the precision needed for dressage, how elegant and at one you are with the horse and was hooked! I was never intending to compete, it didn't interest me at first, and now I absolutely love going out doing the BD classes
I have even bred a foal who has all the potential to be a star, this is not something I would have envisaged 6 years ago when I bought Han
I enjoy jumping the most. I've tried most other things like endurance, pure dressage etc. and jumping is the only thing which I have any enthusiasm for! I find other things boring. Eventing is definately the most exciting, followed by show jumping.
as a kid, i always dreamed of being a top show-jumper. at about 15 i went to a new livery yard and the YO said "why don't you event that horse", even though i was happily sjing. did a few hunter trials, came 6th out of about 150 at a very big HT champs. then, at my first event (Brigstock N!) i learnt the wrong test and only found out 5 mins before, went double clear and came about 12th. i had no idea what "on the bit meant", i thought you got marks for being able to walk, trot and canter circles in the right place in such a small area!
still hooked on eventing, many years on. my mother hates me doing it, she worries sick and has even promised to buy me a mega dressage horse if i'd change to that, but much as i love the dressage, i love the pressure and thrill of xc more. even though i started out sjing, now it's that phase that worries me most.
I have always wanted to event. It was only when I was 30 that I was finally able to fulfill my ambition. Hope to be able to continue but will see how the confidence is when I finally get back riding after a nasty injury. May turn into a dressage diva, you never know! Its more my family I worry about having had them care for me for the last 2 months, its been tough.
Will always be involved as an owner though. My ambition is to have a horse at Badminton. One day it will happen. Even OH is keen to splurge the cash so thats a good thing!! Even have my eye on a potential jockey...
I don't really know if I have chosen a discipline to stick to really. Mr D is very careful and fast SJ (except for when you are watching and I cock it up!
) Not so keen XC but we still give it a go (roll on Croeslan!)
But I think dressage is where we are going to stick (but with sj comps now and again when they are on)
We've affiliated now and it kind of fits with my goals of developing and training to improve both of us. I like the fact that you are always competing against yourself and to better your previous marks and improve comments. I don't really care if we come last as long as we get better over time
SM, I think we've got Andrea V coming to our yard sometime soon- you should come up if you want
As a child I had the most amazing ponies who just went they hunted like stink. Naturally xc was the thing we loved doing and is the phase I have always been strongest in. Doing PC eventing I was so clueless about dressage and at that age you did not think about Sj! Now its the Sj I find the hardest. If they banned xc and hunting I would give up riding.
I'd always thought I'd like to event and had done a few unaffiliated things with my first pony when I was 14. Then, aged 26, along came William - my life has never been the same since. I had in mind I would do novice with him, maybe intermediate if I was brave enough.....and now I am completely hooked and can't imagine doing anything else.
I've dabbled with dressage in the past but now, if I were to consider anything else, I would probably showjump (and I never thought I would hear myself say that!)
I love to jump, I hate to dressage, ergo I showjump
It also helps that i'm a bit of a coward when it comes to x-c although I think if I had a horse that was bold x-c i'd probably be braver myself
When I was a kid I was loaned the PC x-c machine to do the tetrathlon teams with as my pony was not great over natural fences and we did have a lot of fun together...but I think i'm stuck with sj'ing for the rest of my days now.
