Out of curiosity.........

a friend of mine has sold her horse, subject to vet and the buyer has asked for full disclosure of the horse's vet history from the vendor's vets..... can she do this? Does the vendor have to comply?

Clever purchaser! Vendor does not have to comply but will arouse suspision if she does not.

Would be interesting if every horse sold had a "full sevice history".

Another smart move is to use the vendors vets in which case they have to tell you of anything significant in the horses past.I think its good for everybody unless the vendor has something to hide.

This is why I often use the vendor's vets for a vetting.. Its seen as a big no no as standard but the vets do have to disclose whether they have seen the horse previously and what it has had done. If they do not then they are liable for anything that was not disclosed at the vetting stage...

Definately worth noting if you are getting one vetted.

I've put FSH since birth on my boys advert (10 year old homebred!), I have no problem letting people see his 'service history' as it is warts and all, I think its good for the buyers to know (he doesn't have warts ...)

I actually offer full disclosure if I sell a horse. If there haven't been any problems then there is nothing to hide. If there have been, it's an opportunity for the vet to fully explain any implications and my own peace of mind that the buyer is fully aware and cannot come back to me at a later date.

It is most certainly a request I would make if spending any significant money on a horse, and if the buyer refused I would walk from the sale ....

I use the vendors vet too for this reason. When one of mine was vetted a while back, the purchasers used my old vet, who knew the horse. He asked me if I was happy for him to do the vet as he would have to disclose any information her had about her. Was fine by me, I'd told them everything already, and there wasn't a lot to tell.
