And she's probably more knowledgable and understanding now than its previous owners!

True - but one would have thought you'd learn a couple of things before buying a big, strapping WB :p

He was very quiet at least - completely shut down after all he'd been through.

I hate rolkur (sp)

People think it is a short cut for a ready made dressage horse when really it causes so much more problems that can never be fixed! :(

Shocking way to treat any horse. Made me feel quite sick seeing those images, yet again someone trying to dominate a horse. And if this is to help the horse go "on the bit" or in an "outline" they must be absolutely deluded.
Yes I agree. Like rollkur, forcing a horse into an extreme outline (or any outline tbh) is just force, not the horse learning how to carry himself and building the correct muscle over time with sensitive bit work, exercizes etc.

The idea of breaking down muscle in Oberon's example is just ludicrous and no doubt some old 'wisdom' handed down.

I must have been living a very sheltered life, because in all my years with horses, I have never, ever come across such a practice :o It baffles me, it really does. Apart from being very unpleasant for the horse, I fail to see what it is supposed to achieve  :(

How awful.

How much abuse is she getting on FB I wonder??

I don't think we will ever find out who's horse this is.

I think someone originally took these pics on the sly, posted them on the internet and they've gone viral.

They might not even be from the UK.

Perhaps whoever's horse this is will see it sometime and feel ashamed.

That's the best we can hope for :(

I'm in the same boat as you!

I think the second two pics really demonstrate quite how short that cord is.. not much longer than the horse's chest. Poor horse!

Things like this are horrible, but sadly I'm not suprised that it still goes on behind (assumed) closed doors.

I witnessed horses trussed up like this on a walker at a well regarded sport horse stud a few years ago, poor things could barely see in front of them and were as stiff as boards to ride, just these horrible fixed necks, and a local SJ trainer to home used to have imported horses stood for a hour or so in tight side reins.

Disgusting practice.

Horrid- keep imagining the pain it must be in through it's back, withers, shoulder and neck. Poor poor horse. Would like to tie owner in a similar stress position and leave to suffer! NO REALLY I MEAN IT!

It makes the horse/pony appear to go in an outline.. although any judge worth their salt can tell a false outline at a glance & until judges start marking down for this the sick practice will continue.

But surely the back end can't possibly EVER match the front end? How can a horse possibly work properly over its back when it's braced like that? And who would blame the poor horse for being tense and braced? Sigh.

P

Mmmm, I have a feeling that we will be classed as numpties who know nothing! They will have lots of rosettes and money to prove they know what they are doing. I hope everyone doing this sort of thing stops and thinks...

I also hope judges that can't spot this or think it's desirable start to see differently too.

I am reading second hand reports in the online forum communities that this practice is far from uncommon, seen regularly by visiting professionals to yards, mainly competition ones. :(

Seen this used by a dealer when breaking youngsters. He tacked them up, tied baler twine to the bit rings and then to the saddle. Poor things were left like that all day, every day, for a week. he reckoned it "moulded them" and made them responsive in the mouth!

Tammytoo, I hope you only got off with a small fine when you gave the dealer what he deserved ;):D
Perhaps I'm naive, but if I saw this kind of thing "live" I think I'd skin the perpetrator alive.

I thought the onus on tacking a horse up and leaving it, was to make it feel comfortable in what it's wearing, not make it resent it?!

That poor horse, that is so sad, totally unnecessary. I have never seen anything like this first hand at any yard i have been on or to, very sad to hear it happens as often as suggested here. That must be very painful for the horses in question, if you just liken it to holding a difficult stretch pose in yoga for example then maybe you can begin to imagine how painful that must be, so sad :(
The people who do this to horses should be made to stay in an uncomfortable pose for many hours and see how they bloody feel

The hunting/showjumping yard where I worked as a teenager did this from the time a horse turned three. It was and is a common place way to 'make' a horse's mouth. It's a load of rubbish of course, as well as being cruel.

I saw this practice years ago on a yard when I was looking to buy a horse. Tried said horse and liked him was on my way back to the house with owner to talk money when I spotted a tucked away stable, went to look inside and saw a chestnut being subjected to very similar, however he had the twine attached to his bit rings.
Got straight into my car and drove off without saying another word.
