Ye Gods, I have never seen anything quite like this. The grey in the first photos was bad enough, that poor, poor bay in the other pic...actually, I have no words, I'm absolutely shocked that anyone could do this, *******ing despicable.

You really have to ask just how far away is this sort of practice from this... :(

Good Lord I wish hadn't seen that . . . what a travesty. I was thinking that a couple of them didn't look sound and then I thought . . . WTF! How do you measure soundness in horses as broken-looking as those? How on earth can anyone who professes to love horses admire that, much less condone it?

"Tying back" is part of the "traditional" method of breaking horses - you'll often see horses trussed up like this for hours, and turned out in pastures with rollers and tight sidereins too, left for the whole day. It is supposed to "mouth" them; complete bloody madness! I've been trying to fight this for years here (Ireland), but usually just get a puzzled look. Pure ignorance = cruelty.

That is utterly horrendous :(

ETA Just wondering, but do you think that it's pressing its head against the wall to try and alleviate the pressure. You know like if you stub your toe and clamp it tightly, it seems to take the pain away. It would also take some pressure off the mouth.
If so, then that is even worse :(

Here's some more info about the Big Lick TWH's and the problems stamping it out. Not pleasant reading. :(

Can't believe what I am seeing and reading totally sickened that these beautiful creatures can be treated in such a way, put me in mind of medieval torture chambers:mad:

The Highveld Horsecare Unit in SA do great work, as do many others here, but I am truly sickened to the core to see this happening here.

I agree with the call to "name and shame" the owners; I am certain there will be a prosecution, hopefully a conviction and appropriate sentencing.

The terrible thing is that those who commit such abominations HAVE no shame.
Well done for bringing it to the forum's attention - I see lots of international comment on the link itself, and it's great for the Horsecare Unit to get support.

We are all happy to sound off about it on here, but we, myself included, should be shouting our disgust from the rooftops and writing to the BHS welfare dept and asking that they work with all equestrian associations and any and all people who are found to be using methods like these be banned from any type of competition

Yep, I thought that.

Heartbreaking

The first ever yard I kept my boy on (it was a driving yard) used to tie side reins to there horses and leave them standing in there boxes like it, needless to say I didn't last there long. They were even exercised in them :(
As for the TWH, I just can't see how anybody likes to watch them, the horses look crippled and they look like they can barely carry there riders, what is the point?? I have heard there is mega money involved in it but aside from that it just looks hideous!!

Easy for me to say, but did you challenge what you saw ?
I personally couldnt have said nothing but i do realise not everyone is able to challenge and dont like confrontation, id have asked them to tell me what this torture was to obtain, them went through them like a dose of salts.
Anyone caught using this as a means of training horses should be banned for life from keeping horses and from competing in all competitions with horses.
Sorry if im ranting but i feel really strongly on this form of severe abuse

Unfortunatly I was only about 12 at the time and I was at a friends yard, I did not feel it was my place to comment on it due to my age and the lack of authority. I dont think many people would tollerate a young girl giving them some lip  I know I probably wouldn't now!

In my job I spend an unfortunate amount of time looking down, ie my chin is a lot closer to my chest than it should be for prolonged periods of time.

I can guarantee you, this causes a lot of damage- my back is ********d

I can quite literally feel this poor animals pain

Terrible

Doesn't it all go back to standards? We are blaming the producers but who really influences this torture? Judges.

Judges, those who write the rule book, those who inspect breed standards... This is what pushes people.

Why are the judges not imprisoned? Why are the breed associations not reprimanded, banned.

We see rolkur yet, do the judges get the sting? NO WAY! They walk away. If only competition was targeted, this would solve many problems.

Only last year at HOYS I saw evidence of weighting for section c's. It won. This encourages the breeder to keep doing it!!! Aaaaaargh!

Excuse me, just off to throw up because I am sick of the elite horse world.

I agree it is revolting and barbaric, but i am completely naive to the stubben aspect of it all...?

Apologies - it's an 'in' joke to me.

I've always wanted a Stubben bridle but cannot justify the cost.

It bothers me to see such offensive treatment with such a beautiful bridle :(
