Ok I don’t understand people selling horses these days … you phone up a horse that is POA (which I hate btw) … and you ask how much it is… and they get their knickers in a knot because that is the first real question you ask.

So here is the thing - I need to know if I can afford the new horsey … in the poa world that could be 15k or 500k or anywhere in between and tbh the quality of the horse doesn’t seem to necessarily correlate to the price. So yes I am going to open with that question and I am not going to travel to see a horse where I don’t know the answer that question.. equally I don’t want to spend an hour of my time talking on the phone to be only then told the horse is something I won’t pay the price for… so if you don’t want my first question to be ‘how much are you asking?’ Then tell me in the *%$¥ing advert

Rant over

Everytime I see a POA advert I think about 'if you have to ask how much it is, you can't afford it' that I heard a parent say to their child in Harrods once.
I wouldn't respond to one, assuming I probably can't afford said beast.

But even if you can afford it it doesn’t mean you want to spend that much

I hate POA as well. Only once have I enquired and it became clear the very experienced seller had put POA so they could vet the callers and make sure their horse was too expensive for anyone they didn't think was suitable! Not a bad strategy actually! I was told quite bluntly the horse I was enquiring about would not be suitable for me and I wouldn't be allowed to buy him however they did have something else they thought would be perfect for me. He was, I bought him and he was my heart horse.

So sometimes the POA is not a seller grabbing for money but screening out unsuitable purchasers. Usually though I just scroll on by assuming I need to ask so I can't afford, particularly as my budget is miniscule 😂

I wouldn’t use POA or usually respond unless I was blown away. But I haven't had to advertise the last few I’ve sold luckily. I also don’t reply to “how much” and requests for information already in the advert. If it’s not a polite friendly message .. they’re not setting a foot over the threshold to view the golden children 🤣

Oh absolutely, I didn't mean for that to sound how it sounded, I more meant that I assume it will be wildly expensive if I see POA so wouldn't even bother. Apologies!

I enquired about a horse recently which had no price (not an expensive horse). Being sold from a professional yard. I messaged - 'Hi, I wondered if you could give me an indication of price. I have a couple of questions, but won't trouble you with them if the horse is out of budget'. Seller replied with price, I replied back with 'Thank you, that is above my budget, I won't waste your time further'. I think that was succinct and polite on both sides.

As a breeder, I hate messages that literally just say 'how much' . And so many people don't bother to reply with 'thanks, but that's over my budget' when I tell them the price. My prices are on my website but as we can't sell animals on Facebook, people have to message to ask.

If only everyone was like Gamebird when enquiring!

Ive had it in the past usually youngstock. I message asking for price, they say whats your budget. I reply open budget depends on the individual horse. i find its a tactic when they are over pricing their stock. Im straight forward when attempting to sell mine. Price is X. Thats it no negotation. Im more interested in if they can offer a suitable home, not everyone is set up for weanlings/yearlings etc.
