I need to give my shettie some bute this morning i mixed it in his feed but he would only eat half of it, what could i use to make him eat it bare in mind he is having it because he has mild laminitis. He is not off his food he is eating the soaked hay i have put in the stable this morning any help would be greatly recieved.

Thanks will try the marmite, think my son has some i cannot stand the stuff. What is danilon that proberly is a silly question but i have never heard of it.

Thanks i have just googled it you learn something new every day with horses, i think i have been lucky as i have never really had the need to feed bute etc to any of my horses so this is a bit of a learning curve.

Or molasses if your horse can have sugary stuff. I'm bit sad, no horse is getting my hard come by Marmite! I rolled molasses and porridge oats into a sticky ball and squished the bute into it too and fed it as a treat!

Mine won't eat her feed if it's got bute in it, however if I put it in a scoop of soaked sugar beet on its own she'll scoff it down. Have you tried that?

We have one who wont eat bute in feed and says danilon is just as revolting! You can get bute in paste form in a syringe which is a lot easier though more expensive.

I used to use chocolate sauce or golden syrup.
I mixed the bute into a biy of the sauce (I used an old yoghurt pot) then put that in the feed.
It totally fooled my oldgrey mare who was as fussy as fussy can be.
It also got me strange looks when I bought about 6 bottles of the stuff at a time in the supermarket, but I didn't care as it as helping my horse.
lol.

The sugarbeet would be a good idea as he as speedibeet and as little sugar content, that would be better than the sugary disguises with him having lami.
He as never had lami before and i am always careful with his weight he is not a fat shettie at all. I suppose this mild autumn as caught me out i have so much grass it,s unreal.
I have now made a very small paddock for him for the future which he can access his stable so hope this will sort him out for any more lami attacks.

I second the beet pulp if your horse likes it, but in the past I have also sliced the top off an apple, dug a hole inside the apple with a knife, put the bute in the hole, then put the top of the apple back on. A kind of "trojan apple"...

If all else fails, mixing the bute with a bit of water and syringing it works too.

Good luck!

Well obviously you won't want to use anything with sugar in.

Putting the bute in the freezer for a couple of hours is supposed to take the bitterness away.

Otherwise syringe it in. I always mix it with a fair amount of water as it can burn the throat apparently, and a squirt of Propell, or even vegetable oil to carry it down with.

Why is everybody suggesting sugary things to disguise it??!! This pony is LAMINITIC! If his owner didn't have a brain, all these sugestions could be making it worse!!

Have you considered adding mint and or garlic to his feed - as in the feed supplements? I usually find peppermint is good at disguising it and or apple juice...

If all else fails, you might need to syringe it in...

A woman on my yard has been feeding antibiotic powder to her horse in a black treacle sandwich. Horse loves it! I'd have no idea how to make it though. Good thing my horse isnt fussy.

Heres one for you if its not already been said, I core out 1/2 a carrot and poor a little into the top of each then stick the top back in, the strong taste almost always stops them noticing till its too late, yes I know carrots arent good for lammi but desperate times ..

I have been back down and the half eaten bucket is now empty so he got that bute dose, he was due another this evening so put lots of speedibeet water in with his feed, think what the problem is because the amount of food was not enough to disguise the bute. Anyway he still is not liking it but i bet it will be empty by the morning he is also getting lots better. Thankyou all for your suggestions.
