My mare has had 2 accidents this yr the first kicking her tendon costing about £700 and the 2nd a very expensive kick to her hoof costing about £4000 and Im guessing because these are accidents and they cant exclude either, they have writen to me saying that from the renewal date in october I will have to pay 50% of the vets fees im sooooo annoyed, anyone got any experience of this?

Any recomendations of other companies, Im truly shocked as I believed this was one of the best companies in the market

Thanks

NFU. I've had 3 vets claimed (together costing about £6500 total) and loss of my horse (£3k) in the last year. they brilliant paying out.

My premium has gone up this year, but after some research, EVERYONE's premium seems to have gone up this year.

Can recommend AIMS they have paid out without any problems both to myself and a friend who is with them.
Also NFU very good, same as above but find them a bit more expensive.

another for NFU never had to claim yet but they understand horse owners and they have good customer services also they will even cover a borrowed trailer for a day :)

Your claim details will be circulated from one company to another if you decide to move so you may find others will be excluding bits of your horse too.

Sadly you are a bad risk.

its NFU im having problems with!

She may not ever have another accident they were both freak chances.

ill try the others I have no problems with exclusions on areas u expect it but I feel they are being unreasonable

Pet Plan have been amazing for me!
My horse had an accident in novemeber that has cost me around £5000 in vets fees and physio fees everything has come on time and they have been very helpfull
Would reccomend

I don't think their out of order I'm afraid, they could just refuse to insure you after making 2 claims in a year..

All insurance companies get iffy if you claim, a friend of mine was refused Re-newal of their home insurance because they made two claims for problems with the drains.

Well I've had 3 and a bit (the bit being some vets bills that just went over the renewal) My run of bad luck has to end now!

Maybe give them a call and talk to them about it?

Saying that, I was surprised that my friends excess with the NFU is £10 more than mine. I'd have thought these things would be standard.

I a with NFU and just renewed my policy for my two horses and trailer with a £57 reduction on my premium making it less than last year even with the raise in premiums.

Not sure about my dog though when his premiumis due next year as I have made a huge claim for around £4000 which they have paid most of already with no fuss and the rest is due to be paid now.

I love NFU and to be honest of all the companies I have been with they are the best and with you having two claims in one year I would imagine any insurance company would have hit you with the same news.

I'm with NFU and they're fantastic, having been really helpful etc every time I've claimed, I can't rate them enough!

Petplan have also been really good but excluded lots of things.

I'm pretty sure they don't do this - they do with motor and household but not horse.

Insurance companies make very little from horse insurance (compared to say home or motor insurance) because of the cost of vet fees and number of incidents, so they do come down rather harsh on the policyholder that cost them the most. I know this is not helping you, but at least they are still offering to pay 50% of your vet fees and haven't just declined to renew it altogether. I would give them a call to discuss it further and see what alternatives they can do (eg a higher excess but full payment about this amount). Maybe they will reconsider after a year without any more claims.

Failing that I would definitely shop around to see what else other can offer.

Do they mean 50% of future accidents or 50% of any claim?? If for future accidents i'd say that was fair enough but not for illnesses too.

I've got a current claim for a ligament injury to my mare. Scottish equestrian ahve paid up in full for TWO MRI scans. If I was with NFU they would have only paid 50% of any MRI scan (it says so in the small print). Each scan was £1000. So i'm guessing my premium will be going up next year. lol

After several big claims over the years with NFU I was beginning to almost feel sorry for them each time I had to make a claim. They always paid out without a quibble but this year I had a letter from them informing me that I would have to pay 25% of any further claims. I was quite surprised as they had already put my excess up which I thought was fair.

Whilst I really rate and would recommend NFU I've had to change this year as their premiums went up by 40% and that was after a £179 discount for being a long standing customer. I'm about to move to Am Trust as their cover was pretty much the same including exclusions, although tack cover is much better, and it was almost £300 less! I've had to have a 2 stage vetting done, but even taking that into account, it'll save me £150 this year.

Oh dear - that doesn't bode well for when I renew with NFU in Sept.
After 3 big claims over the previous 2 years I wasn't surprised when they whacked up my price last sept. I looked around but wouldn't have saved a lot by moving and they've been really good.
Plus it's not easy to get someone to take on a horse with ongoing issues.
I expect I'll get asked to pay a percentage. Is it permanent or do they reassess each year?

I have always insured with petplan and they have been great, they paid out for my mares colic op within 4 weeks. My dog has had 2 ops on her both back legs and has had x rays, scans countless courses of steroid injections and is currently on expensive tablets which she will be on for life they. I have made countless claims and they have always paid out :). My dogs insurance costs more than the horse but no were near the amount we have claimed over 2 years for her.

^^ Exactly my experience! AIMS have been great so far- hoping Dex;'s claim goes smoothly *fingers crossed*

This is the first time that I have had to claim on horse insurance and PetPlan have been brilliant. They have been able to advise me where everything is up to and what further information they needed.

The MRI was approved within 24 hours of them having all the information together.

I don't know what next year's premium will look like - or what exclusions they will put on, but unless I have any major problems, I think I will stay with them.

NFU told me that any exclusions are permanent and not subject to any future reviews, but I don't know if that also applies to paying a percentage of vet fees.

Right NFU are getting a bit of bad press here!

I am with NFU and once upon a time they just did exclusions! NOW they just up the renewal fee on the vets section to another 50% on top of what you are paying!

I had 2 claims within 9 months of each other losing both horses-one caused by someone elses professional stupidity (The NFU know this and refuse to go after the person even though the PROFESSIONAL BODY that the person belongs to found them to be guilty!!!!!) and then the other claim was a freak accident so no one to blame.

They really upped my renewal saying if I don't claim next year then they will reduce my premiums!

Guess what! I have had to claim! Other wise I would have been bankrupt with the ongoing vets fees as hello that's why we pay insurance!

So guess what! The premium this year is nearly 800! Both neds only valued at the minimum-no loss of use, just vets and third party and one of them is a veteran!

I don't know what else to say to you except I know what you are going through and as I am mid claim I cannot move! I would be far happier paying a higher EXCESS tbh rather than hiking up my insurance and tbh getting to the point where sadly I cannot afford insurance and then we are getting into a very dangerous place what with riding on roads and going to shows etc!

If it's just 3rd party liability you're desperate for for riding on the roads, join the BHS gold member for £54 and you get that included.

Interesting how they treat people differently?

im with scottish equestrian and they have paid out almost £1000 on sarcoid treatment and they arent going to exclude it untill taz has been sarcoid free for a year :D

Another fan of Scottish Equestrian here! Very fair prices, easy to deal with, pay up claims quickly and don't seem to place exclusions unnecessarily.

Having worked in an equine vets I never encountered any problems with this company, although in 11 years of owning my current horse and one small claim in year 1 I think they are doing well out of me!

I feel sorry for the NFU in my case, the year before last they paid out for 5 claims on one horse - yes 5! He was pts a year ago last April as he was still lame and uncomfortable on 2 bute a day. They did not pay out for the loss of horse as they didn't deem it under the BEVA rules. In June last year I got the love of my life horse, whizzed through 5 star vetting and 5 weeks later was lame, they have just paid out for 3 claims, in total I think they have paid on his about £11,000, the claims have ended now so I will have to continue treatment but he had maxed out the ongoing ones already. NFU have been nothing but wonderful and although they are a little more than say other insurance companies, they have always come through for me.

My renewal was in May whilst we were a few months off finishing the claims, but they had already paid out a lot and my premium didn't go up much!

When I was looking at insuring, you had to declare every single vet call out within the last year, and if you don't declare something which they later find out about......

I found that after making a claim for my last horse's skin problem, this was then excluded totally from the policy. I've heard of other stuff like this - they get round it by making the policy only annual, so that you effectively have to renew every year and on that new policy, BANG, cover has been reduced. I'm sure they all do it. Got us by the short and curlys

This is why I am feeling insurance isnt worth it! My horse now has Feet, Stomach and breathing all excluded from ANY future claims - even though I never claimed for treatment - just because they are on his vets record. The 'incidents' were not horses fault - caused by yard staff/situation.

So now he is just used, and if he breaks a leg out competing thats it, PTS as I can't afford treatment without insurance, but I have been told that even with a vets letter expxlaining about the foot thing that LEGS will still be excluded :(.
