Hi there,

One of the dogs I walk rolled in something disgusting today and stank the car out all the way home. I did the best I could with baby wipes etc but she was still pretty ripe going in. Warned her owner and hoping that it will have dried out enough to brush out later.

Got me thinking though, what is the best way to overcome that smell?

Want to do some research so I can update my blog with ideas and thought you lot would probably have "dealt" with it more than most!

Here she is little minx

Lol I can see me lurking about Macdonalds to get those little sachets as ready to go emergency shampoos!

In the absense of vast quantities of tomato catsup, I have been known to wash down a dog in a solution of shampoo and vinegar. I keep gallons of both white and malt vinegar in my shop (malt is particularly good on dark coats as it brings up a glorious shine, white I prefer on white coats in case there's any staining).

Everyone seems to say Tomato ketchup but does anyone know the science - it it's the vinegar why do we not just use vinegar (far less messy). Starting to wish I had listened in science classes all those years ago!

Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled over soft furnishings and carpet (don't think it would work on leather seats) absorbs the odours and then you can just vacuum it off after a few hours.

Ditto this ... I've used it to remove eau de skunk a couple of times with pretty good success.

i would guess that it is the combination of the vinegar, and the tomato. the natural acids in the tomato break down the odour. ;)

tomatoes are also a great cure for sunburn... chop in half and run on the burn. hurts like hell but it takes the heat out. (if its good enough for the aussies then it must work!)

Don't know whether this was just a fluke, but my lab rolled in a very dead rabbit and stank.
Only thing I had was Barrier Lavender wash... And a very quick wash and rinse got rid of the smell.
Does anyone know if it's ok to use Horse products on dogs?

Yes, most horse and dog shampoos are roughly the same pH balance anyway. Many of hte products I use in the grooming salon are labled that they are for use on dogs, cats, puppies, kitten, ferrets, farm animals!

I have had the same problem with Fox poo and dead rabitts! My mongrel bitch does it regular. Recently bought a great product online and it worked really well. It was called Pure Oxygen Fungal wash & Deodoriser. I got it from ashforthequestrian.com, bought it for this but have also used it for my youngster with mudfever and it worked brilliant. They have some really great stuff on this site, ended up doing quite a bit of xmas shopping!
