I am interested in a 7 yo horse. However, he dishes slightly (left fore only) Other than this he is ace!

Would you consider it? or would it cause too many problems?

My 7yo dishes in both front feet - hes currently competing at BD Medium level, schooling at Adv Med and will hopefully be my Grand Prix horse. Neither of my trainers have a problem with it.

Also with good shoeing it can be made better.

I find when my horse gets tired he dishes more than if hes fresh.
 
What do you want to do with him? Top notch showing it'll be a no no, but for most disciplines and most levels it'll be fine - although I do find it weird that he only dishes in one foot - have you had him vetted? What did the vet say about it?
 
Hes an ex police horse and has passed 5* vettings. Hell just be used for hacking, bit of jumping and hunter trils. No showing or proper competing =]

I read that too and im happy to pronouce mine dishes and it doesnt bother me, nor affect her jumping etc.

In that case, I wouldn't hesitate. I'd have given my eye teeth to have been able to buy and ex police horse when I was looking last year. And quite frankly it could have three heads and five legs - and I'd still buy it!

Mines dishes with one foot. Caused no problems. Alot of top horses dish - Pippa Funnel described her top horse (its name is on the tip of my tongue!!) as "legs go everywhere" when viewed from the front.

Ths showing world wouldnt accept it - but for everything else, as long as hes not lame or offset anwhere, it wouldnt worry me.
 
Mine dishes with both front feet however due to his increase in fittness he doesn't do it as much as he did.
I wouldn't and don't have any issues with horses that do this, I am sure there are many top horses that do this (one olympic dressage horse used to dish i think...)
 
definately, my lad dishes with his front left, and on the basis that i have no interest in showing it doesn't matter at all. He's as sound as they come, and my farrier has managed to correct it slightly.

plus, the dressage judges at PN level never comment on it so i guess it really doesn't matter.
 
my big girl dishes on one front, we call her Forrest Gump when she canters pmsl

it doesn't cause problems and she competed regularly up until i had her!! hers is one sided as she actually has a slight twist in the fetlock on that leg. one thing which we have noticed is that she drifts to the middle of the road when hacking home, her old farrier suggested that the camber of the road would affect her balance so she drifts to make it more comfortable for herself, especially when she's tired, bless her wonky old legs

Nothing wrong with dishing, as folks say unless you're doing a lot os showing, but as you're not, he sounds lovely. May I ask why he's been sold on from the police at such a young age?
 
My girl dishes terribly. Hasn't stopped her doing a thing, she does reasonably well dressage, won loads BSJA and has won showing classes. Had her 9 years and never been lame *touches wood*
 
I used to have a lovely little TB mare who dished on one leg only. The dishing wasn't due to her conformation but an accident as a youngster that resulted in an operation. She was a lovely mare, always sound unless she'd turned herself inside out in the field and we did a bit of everyhting together.

Unless you wanted the horse for County Showing I wouldn't be put off.

He bucked his rider off at a football match apparently lol.
But YO thinks a lot of the problem was that, because he's quite short backed, the police saddles are quite long and put some weight on his loin area. Bless him, hes lovely =]

Hi - you may not get this message as yours was an old post but doing the same as you did last week and have a bit of thing about horses moving straight. The one I am looking at dishes on one foreleg only too. Other than that he is a real poppet. Did you buy your police horse and is he ok? Was basically going to give Jay Jay a miss as I though it would cause unsoundness problems, but only want him for hacking and sponsored rides. Did as normal when not sure, checked H &amp; H forum, so really glad you put that post on. Feel better about it now. Jay Jay is 11.
